We’re having a new 4” concrete patio installed along with regrading the yard and a few other small things. I need to figure out the step coming out of the back sliding door.
I’ve got access to a bunch of leftover granites, and two of them are the correct width and perfectly straight/flat with a thermal side. I was thinking about laying them on the flats on the new patio and ending up with two 6” tall steps. Similar to the last picture.
The top step would be an 18” landing and the intermediate step would end up overlapping the top 6” for a 12” deep landing. I’d build a 2x6 PT frame to hold the top step and have it inset a foot on either side so you can’t see the frame.
Contractor suggested I just pour a concrete step “because it’s easier to maintain” but my wife and I think the granite would be nicer to look at. Either option would not cost me any extra.
Is my idea crazy? Is the concrete step really a better idea? Other options I haven’t considered? We’re pouring this Wednesday so I need to make a decision soon.
Edit: Previously we had a single concrete step, 8” up from the patio to the step tread and then another 8” up into the house. It worked but it always felt like a bigger step down/up than it should be.
Gotta keep the crews hydrated
