How to teach toddler to take bites?

My son is 13 months old and a pretty good eater. Since he developed his pincer grasp, he’s always preferred small pieces of food that are bite sized. He chews well, but doesn’t actually take bites out of his food. He has 8 teeth, so he should be able to take bites.

We’ll sometimes give him toast strips, and he’ll sort of suck on them until a piece comes off, but I feel like he’s not actually biting it with his teeth. Anytime we give him something that requires taking bites, he’ll either try to shove the whole thing in his mouth or just not eat it. He’ll take bites out of a whole banana but as soon as it’s small enough to physically fit in his mouth, he’ll shove the rest of it in his mouth, which makes me really nervous.

Any tips for teaching him to actually take notes? Or is that something that will come naturally with age?

Hitting milestones naturally vs intervening?

My son is 12 months and has had a PT since he was 3 months due to torticollis. He doesn’t need a PT anymore but qualified for a full year through the state.

He has met all physical milestones early or on time (rolling at 3 months, sitting up\getting into sitting at 5/6 months, and crawling at 7.5 months). He has been pulling up to stand and cursing since 9 months and is very confident/quick. He’s 12 months and has just started letting go and trying to balance for a few seconds, and he’s tried to take a few steps but without much success. He cannot stand on his own for more than a few seconds and has never tried to stand up from the middle of the floor.

His PT thinks his left leg is much weaker than his right, which is leading to lack of balance and hindering him learning to walk. My thought is that his left leg will naturally get stronger as he continues to cruise, and he’ll walk when he’s ready. His PT wants us constantly following him around forcing him to pull up to stand using his left leg. This feels counterproductive, and I don’t want to interrupt his playing or piss him off.

Is there any evidence that intervention is helpful for a typically developing baby who is not yet delayed in milestones? Is there any evidence that it can hurt development?

11 month old only wants processed food and fruit. What do I do?

Hi all. My baby is 11.5 months old. We did a mix of purées and finger foods starting at 6 months, and stopped purées around 6 months. My baby LOVED purées but had also been pretty good with finger foods as well. He’s gone through picky periods, but we seem to be absolutely stuck at this point.

The only foods he’ll eat are fruits, sweet potato, yogurt, and then processed foods— chicken nuggets, quesadillas, frozen meatballs, turkey sausage, bread. I’ve tried to make these items homemade, and he literally won’t even touch them (unless he’s picking them up to throw them on the floor). Occasionally he’ll eat veggie fritters or pancakes, but that is not reliable.

We keep trying to give him table food (what we’re eating), but he just absolutely refuses to even touch it. The second he sees it on his plate or tray, he just starts fussing and reaching toward the kitchen like he wants something else.

I know people say that they’ll eat if they’re hungry, but the issue is that he IS hungry and still won’t eat. If we give him something he wants, he’ll eat an enormous amount.

Today at lunch, we gave him the deconstructed ingredients from our chicken pot pie. Shredded chicken, carrots, peas, potato, and some bready crust. All of it seasoned and (in our opinions) really tasty. He ate a few pieces of bread, and would barely even look at the rest of the food. We put the rest back in the fridge to try again later. 2 hours later we tried again. Same thing, he wouldn’t even touch it. I gave up and gave him some Greek yogurt, and he was scarfing it down like he was starving. He had about 1.5 cups of Greek yogurt, a bunch of strawberries and kiwis, half a banana, and a babybell cheese, so he was definitely hungry.

I just don’t know what I should do. I don’t want him to be hungry, and I want him to associate mealtime with positive feelings. But I also don’t want him to live off of chicken nuggets and snacks. I constantly feel stressed thinking about our next meal and how frustrating I already know it’s going to be.
