Factor in no teeth?

My baby is 8.5 months old with nary a tooth in sight. It seems of of the recommendations from Solid Starts etc assume teeth--eg pasta. My baby can hold it and gum it but really can't bite any chunks off. Are you guys making special accommodations until your babies have a tooth or two to help with biting/chewing?

Pediatrician told me not to follow solid starts preparation recommendations

Pediatrician said that she has seen too many babies choke from recommended preparations shown on the solidstarts website. She suggested I cut food smaller than his windpipe which is apparently the width of a pinky finger. I mentioned he wouldn't be able to help himself eat and she said he could work on his pincer grasp. He's not quite there yet so now I'm finding that I'm just feeding him with a spoon or my hand. Anyone else have success starting off by feeding your baby by hand or spoon and them taking it over when they master the pincer? Anyone else's Pediatrician recommended against solid starts?

Allergic reaction to peanut butter?

This is my son third time trying peanut butter, the doctor actually told us we should introduce him to peanut butter during our 4th month appointment but we didn’t start till he turned six months since he didn’t want solid, but this is the first time he had reaction. He still doesn’t really eat solid just plays around with it he has been acting normal nothing out of ordinary just his face was red where the peanut butter touched but only on his face not on his hands, body or fingers even though peanut butter was all over! Thankfully all the redness went away after 30 min.

Feeling desparate

My almost 10 month old who was feeding herself like a champ from 6 months has completely stopped self feeding and demands to be fed and throws a fit and throws food everywhere even when she is hungry. Started BLW at 6 months.

Context: About a month ago, we moved into my in law's place from my mom's while we are building our home.

  1. My baby used to eat with us every meal when we ate. This changed after moving to a different city where my in-laws live and their timings are wildly different. So, I'm having to make separate meals for her and the family. And they eat super spicy food and we can't just offer what's on our plate. They eat bf at 11 am, lunch at 4 pm and dinner at 8 pm. This has completely thrown off my baby's 8 am, 1 pm, 5 pm schedule.

  2. We had to be on the go on a lot of days cuz we are shopping for stuff for our home. So we did purees and spoon feeding while on the road cuz BLW was time and effort consuming and didn't seem like a feasible option on the road. But now, she has gotten used to the more efficient spoon feeding and doesn't wanna go back to self feeding. I think this was the biggest mistake I made.

  3. Baby is teething and starting to walk independently. She has started vocalising and gesturing "No" even for the slightest inconveniences. Don't know if these things have got anything to do with this.

  4. I've tried just putting food on her tray and eating the same food in front of her with wild animated gestures, tried stories for self feeding. Nothing has worked so far.

How do I get her to eat by herself again? I'm so desperate.

Any help/advice is greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

…are we all giving 3 meals + 2 snacks a day?

blw is messy, prepping food takes time, and cleaning up each time is a chore. sometimes our LO doesn’t even want to have her snack. I was debating dropping a snack to combine into a 4th meal, so it’s all meals… anyone else tried this?

breakfast - eggs, toast, beans + milk

brunch…? lol (our snack is usually something like oatmeal or whole fat yogurt mixed with ground nuts and blended fruit + healthy fat like avocad)

***nap***

lunch - veggies, protein, carb like bread or pasta

dinner - veggies, protein, carb like bread or pasta + milk

EDIT —- adding our usual same menu

My son (12m) will only eat off a fork that I’m holding

I’ve been doing baby led weaning since 6 months, but he’s never really been good at it. Finally, I was pretty concerned that he wasn’t eating enough solids about 2 months ago so I started tearing everything into small pieces and hand feeding him until he would “realize” he’s hungry and start feeding himself. That worked for a while but now he just feeds everything to the dogs immediately. The only way he will significantly eat now is if I put small bites in his mouth off the tip of a fork.

He’s growing fine. Still breastfeeding a lot, although we don’t nurse within an hour of mealtime. He does not have any teeth yet.

I want to get him back to eating independently - I have some toddler forks but can’t bring myself to give spiky metal to a 12 month old.

Kind of feeling like we are regressing. What do I do?

Water

I will fill up my baby’s tiny cup with 2 ounces of water when I remember with Meals.

He goes insane for it!! He is obviously learning so if I were to guess only about half an ounce actually makes it down. He starts screaming and wants more. I had to start giving it at the end of his meal because if I give it with his food, he will only want the water. I am mostly doing it so he learns the mechanics of the cup.

The other night he started getting so upset when I took a cup away that he was screaming so hard he was turning red. He is literally trying to drink like he has been stuck in a desert and is dehydrated. He definitely is not though – he’s drinking the same amount of milk.

Has anyone else gone through this? I’m thinking maybe he is just having fun with the cup?

Recipes 6 month old

My baby is doing really well with baby led weaning but I'm a bit stuck on what to give him! I've been giving him vegetable fingers and yogurt most days but now we're repeating things and I want to be more adventurous. Does anyone have any recipes suitable for a 6 month old? I'm finding it hard to find things specifically suitable for a 6 month old. TIA!

Curious about egg strips & choking

Hi all!

I just started BLW, and our pediatrician was very supportive, but did cautious us on eggs and said she was traumatized from her residency when apparently a baby choked on scrambled eggs.

Can someone describe why the eggs strips shown in solid starts are safe? Seems to me like it’s something a baby could bite off a big blob of very easily but it wouldn’t necessarily be super soft in their mouth and could be a choking risk, no?

Asking completely genuinely! THANKS!

I think i screwed up and i need guidance 🆘

Hi friends. LO is almost 15 months. I think i screwed up with his eating habit 😞 I did blw when he started solids. But somehow, somewhere along the way, came sickness and teething and i started to worry about him not eating a lot and i did not know how and when it happened, suddenly we are eating (me feeding him) in front of the tv and sometimes while carrying him. The mess from blw really makes me overstimulated. I am a sahm mom and sometimes i do lunch in front of tv just because i need him to eat.

Now at 15 months he doesnt really want to eat his meal at the highchair on his own. Except for breakfast in which he feeds himself and i help him. But lunch and dinner are still a struggle to me. Please guide me on how to restart blw and reshape his eating habit. He is a happy 11kg boy. He hasnt walk or talk yet but always signing for milk/all done/water etc. Also love his milk and i am trying my best to cut down his milk intake, but he will have a meltdown if he doesnt get his milk. I just started putting him his highchair snd serve food and eat with him and let him explore and follow his cue if he is done.

I know as parents, my duty is to decide what, when and where he will eat. He will decide how much or if he wants to eat. What do you tell yourself when they dont eat? Do i just stick to what im currently doing and let him do the rest? How do i help him figure out eating?

TIA! :)

Tips on seasoning food post cooking

Hi there! I've just started weaning my 6 month old, currently still in the simple ingredients, mixing purees and finger foods stage, but I'm looking forward to feeding the baby what we eat and having family mealtimes all together.

However, I am into my cooking and I know I'm going to miss seasoning as I cook!

So please could I have some general advice on seasoning after cooking? Any staples that you recommend having out on the table beyond the obvious salt, pepper and chilli flakes? I'm also thinking that buying some nice posh grinders will make me happy and forget about what I've lost 😂

FYI, I'm in the UK so if there are British folk on here that can recommend specific products, I'm all ears.

BLW transition — help?

So we did mostly purees when started feeding at 6 months because she’s easily constipated so wanted it a bit smoother for her to learn. All my other kids did BLW from the start so this was a new move for me

But she’s 9 months old now and despite my trying and trying there’s two issues I’m running into

  1. She only seems to want to eat puree / smooth food still. Hates chewing & working for it

  2. She won’t TOUCH her food. I have to feed it to her / physically put it in her mouth. If I had her food she drops it, if I put it on the plate she pushes it off. Doesn’t even try to pick it up. She does not want anything in her hands ever

Idk what to do I’ve “waited for her to come around” for now 2 months and still nothing

Photos mostly just to get attention on the post

Is this too much?

How often should I be feeding my 8 month old? Right now she is eating 3 meals a day and sometimes a snack.

I feel like it's a little much some days, but she is (surprisingly) a really good eater (knock on wood).

She loves food and actually jumped up percentiles once we started solids, but some days I feel like she's eating SOO much, and get concerned that she's not getting enough milk, even though she is still on the breast just as often as she was before solids, every two hours.

Just curious on how if I am feeding her too much or if it's just enough?

can my 4.5 month old start solids?

can my 4.5 month old start eating solids?

i have been half pumping half breast feeding for the past 4.5 months, when she was a NB i was lucky and was able to make a small freezer stash but now that she’s older i’m barely able to keep up with her eating needs. i am at the end of my stash and only have 2 bags left.

to make it worse, since i’m not making enough milk for her, i’m trying to pump more to increase my supply and it’s making my nipples bleed (thank goodness they alternate lol) and instead of getting extra milk i’m having to throw the blood milk away.

so anyways back to my original question, can i start introducing solids to my baby? every time she sits with us to eat she tracks food and will often reach for it. she can completely hold her head up by herself and can almost sit unsupported (in her high chair with the support of the table in front of her she can sit up straight)

i just really want to be able to continue to provide the milk she needs and i know once she has incorporated solids into her diet, the amount of milk i’m producing will be more than enough to keep her exclusively on breast milk for the rest of the year. obviously if i have to start adding in some formula to keep up with her then that’s okay, i know she’s gonna start solids soon but whew i’m just tired of pumping and hoping for a little bit of a rest😅

just for some info, she eats in between 4-5.5 oz. per feeding on the bottle 4-5 times a day and then breast feeds once or twice in the morning. she’s a damn milk monster

Plate vs ate

7.5 mo, pear, strawberry and banana-peanut butter pancake with blueberries. We started solids just before 6 months as he has shown readiness, but soon after he started teething I guess and he didn’t eat anything since. So I stopped preparing special meals for him as it was a total waste of time, and just offer our food to him when we’re all at the table (of course I modified the foods to no sugar and reduced salt). He sometimes puts some foods to his mouth, and it doesn’t look like he hates it, but he just mashes everything and throws it on the floor. I’m not stressing myself though, he still learns textures and flavours, and he’ll eventually come around.

When did your breastfed baby start eating more and having less BM?

Hi folks. My EBF 11 month old baby doesn’t really care for food. She usually has a few bites if I’m lucky and the rest of the food ends up played with and on the floor. She doesn’t let me feed her either, though she used to. Purees, BLW, doesn’t matter - she wants to be independent and not be fed.

I aim for 3 meals a day but sometimes can only do 2. It’s so hard when she eats none of it. I think she gets 95% of her calories from breast milk. She isn’t crawling yet though very very close, she’s more cerebral and likes to sit and explore toys. Also no teeth yet but she’s cutting her first two. Idk if there’s any correlation between teeth, crawling and food intake?

When did your EBF baby start to show interest in food? How did the weaning process go, for those of you with babies who didn’t self wean? My baby will definitely not be self weaning any time soon and I don’t want to wean her until she’s ready. Keen to hear from people with older babies and toddlers who preferred BM to food, and how their feeding journeys went to how they are now.

thank you for sharing!

sos... struggling with solids. advice?

baby is 6.5 months old and is not taking well to solids. we have tried several veggies, baby oatmeal and a few fruits. she just doesn't have interest at all in eating. she doesn't know what to do with the food (which obviously i know is normal as she's a baby) but every baby in my family has taken really well to solids and i'm worried that she isn't.

did anyone else struggle at this stage? i just don't want her to be impacted by only on BM rather than having solids and milk.

am i just overreacting and need to chill?? clearly a FTM here 😅

Making her meals has become a fun part of my day

Getting the hang of prepping meals for her and honestly having so much fun introducing new foods. If it’s a fruit I haven’t tried in forever.. or ever, I’ll try it with her too 😂 We’re both out here sharing the experience together.

Today’s breakfast: peanut butter on sourdough toast, strawberries, mango(new fruit of the week lol), blackberries, and cucumbers 🫶

What are some foods your babies ended up surprisingly loving? I need more ideas 👀
