Milestones

We have my daughter’s 9 month visit this week and they typically ask about milestones. We also see neonatology but we’re on a different schedule with that. My daughter is just about 7 months adjusted and 9.5 months old(born 28w)

I’d love to know what your preemies were working on at 9-10 months actual! We are in EI for physical therapy so I know her motor delays are improving, but I’m worried we’re missing other delays as that’s the only therapy we’re in and we haven’t seen neo in a few months.

Scrambled egg fail

Just introduced egg to my 9 month old (premie roughly 7m adjusted) and I’m so excited to expand my offerings for her meals. I wanted to make scrambled egg strips like I see on here and solid starts but… how? I am admittedly not the most talented in the kitchen, thanks to my partner being a retired chef. Help. I ended up putting the egg and feta onto her feeder spoon because her pincer grasp isn’t developed yet.

Plate vs ate

My 9 month old premie (6.5 month adjusted) is taking to BLW really well! We’ve been doing purées for about 7 weeks with mostly spoon feeding or handing her a loaded spoon while we worked through torticollis and trunk strength delays. Now we’re moving and grooving! She loves feeding herself. I still offer a puree with each meal while we transition but she’s less and less interested in me feeding her. Love to see it.

Whole wheat toast with mashed banana & banana pb puree
Banana sticks
Blueberries in her feeder thing. They were sour 😂

How are we keeping allergens in the diet when we’re only doing one meal per day and also offer new food consistently? 😅 I don’t think she’s ready for a second meal time and clean up takes so long I have no idea when we would even fit it in with our current schedule.

Lark re-check

I haven’t worn in a few months due to recovery from surgery. I desperately needed a short nap from my 9 month old. Happy to say our Lark still has sleepy dust!!! Do I need to schedule a recheck with them? She’s gotten so big since I last wore her. Is she too low? I’m wondering if there’s adjustments I can make or if I just need to commit to going back to the gym 😂 she’s about 19lb and I’m not sure of length but probably around 28”

Plate vs Ate 9m/6m adjusted

She usually gets way more jiggy with the banana but today was the first time she had toast so that was the star of the show. More banana for mama 🤷🏻‍♀️

Peach, sweet potato and granola puree
Banana
Toast with butter and apple cherry puree

We’ve been doing a mix of puree and BLW for about 6 weeks now with my little premie. Taking it really slow as she is working through torticollis and finally losing her tongue thrust. At first it was mostly smooth puree but over the last 2 weeks I’ve been more adventurous with BLW and mashed vs smooth. I’m a first time mom with major anxiety but I think we’re doing well so far!

Cups

This is not super BLW related so please delete if necessary.

How did you teach your baby to drink from a straw? I’ve had the nuk learner cup for my baby to start drinking water. We tried two different cups prior and she couldn’t get anything out. At least with this one I know she’s drinking it! I just bought a tum tum straw cup with no valve hoping that may be easier for her to learn on, but how? Just keep offering it?

What do we think? 9 month old

Baby’s eyes - dads eyes - two photos of moms eyes, they change a lot. It’s hard to see but there’s a yellow ring around pupils in mom’s eyes. Will baby’s eyes stay bright like they are? They were very dark blue at birth.

Why won’t this baby sleep?

I posted a few weeks ago about my 8 month old (5.5 month adjusted) and it feels like sleep has gotten even worse. She is working on sitting, rolling, potentially teething and starting purées. Lots going on in that little brain! I’ve tried to stay the course of consistency but it’s been weeks and I am so tired. I was so spoiled by her previous 10-11 hour nights!
EDIT: LOL that post was only 8 days ago and it literally feels like weeks… as someone told me on that post, I may just need to wait this out. Starting to work again and watch other children on this broken sleep has me feeling insane.

For at least a week now we’ve had consistent wake ups around 10:30-11pm and 3-3:30am. I’ve been offering a bottle, figuring that she’s hungry. These night time bottles are bringing her up to 40+oz a day! That seems like a ton, but I’m a first time mom so not sure. I’ve tried increasing her bottles volume during the day but she can only take so much at once due to reflux. I feed on demand so I’m not force feeding or starving her by any means, she lets me know when she’s hungry. Why is she suddenly needing these night bottles? Is it all the new activity?

I’ve tried extending wake windows and we can’t get more than 2-2.5hr max. We are also on the go a lot as I babysit other kids some days and we have a lot of specialist appointments/therapies. She always falls asleep in the car on a 10+ min drive and it’s not always possible to time it around a nap. I’d say she’s getting 3 naps consistently now, and has always been higher sleep needs but that seems to be changing as she can tolerate less day sleep now… but that is translating to worse night sleep??? Please help. Ask questions if I’ve left out any necessary information.

Subaru Outback

Still doing research for the purchase of my baby’s convertible car seat. We currently have the Cybex Anton infant seat and the passenger seat is at the perfect spot for my partner or I to ride comfortably.

If anyone is familiar with this seat/car I’d love to know your thoughts on the evenflo revolve360 and if it would fit nicely.

Alternatively, is there anywhere you can go to trial car seats to get the fit right without having to buy and return?

Strollers

I currently have an evenflo pivot xpand stroller from my baby shower. It will be nice when we have a second baby but right now it feels so cumbersome for just my little girl. I’m looking for recommendations for lightweight strollers, preferably that I can open and close with one hand, but not necessary. A must is that it’s all one piece though. My current stroller is a separate bassinet/toddler seat and then a heavy base. It takes up so much space in my Subaru outback. I’d love to stay under $200 if possible. Thank you in advance!

Teething pain

How do you know when to give pain relief for teething? My daughter is definitely beginning to teethe, nothing popping through yet but she has been fussier than usual. No fevers. I’m not really sure at what point I need to intervene further than allowing her frozen teethers and regular teethers. Is there anything else I should do before medication? She’s not normally a fussy baby so I know if she is, something is really bothering her. First time mom, can ya tell?

Managing FOMO as a new mom

Some of my closest friends are getting together for a pool party today. I’ve been dying to take my baby (8mo) in the pool. I’ve had issues with my c-section incision (+multiple additional surgeries) and though the issue isn’t resolved my surgeon gave me the ok to take my baby into the pool.

We’re going through a heat wave where I live with an extreme heat warning so I’ve decided not to go to the pool party today and I am sad. I love floating around the pool and I am excited to share that with my baby. I was terrified of water as a kid and never learnt to swim so I want to do better than my parents and expose my baby to water early and often, but that hasn’t happened due to my incision complications. I told my partner to go to the party anyway, these are his best friends and I know he really wants to go.

The baby and I will stay home, safe in the AC but how do I deal with the FOMO? Baby comes with me everywhere I go, even to work, and I love spending time with her. She’s a preemie and spent 70 days in the NICU so yes, I am absolutely attached and obsessed with my baby. This is the first time that having a baby has stopped me from doing something I want to do. I am obviously doing what’s best for her and staying home but jeez I didn’t expect to be so sad about it.

To swim or not to swim?

We were invited to my friends pool tomorrow at 1pm. We’re in a heat wave and The high here is 101° peaking around 4pm. My daughter is 8 months (preemie/5 months adjusted), would you go and take her in the pool?

I’ve been dying to take her in the water. I’ve had some recurring issues with my c-section and have yet to go swimming this summer. My baby is only a baby this year, and I’m really looking forward to experiencing this with her. Does being in the water help with the high temp? I know for myself I can tolerate a hot day if I can be in and out of the pool but how well does an infant do? Is that going to be really jarring for her immature temperature regulation to keep up with? The house will be cool with AC so we’re not in the heat 100% of the time we’re there, a total of maybe 2-3 hours. Though if we’re inside, it would be just my daughter and I. Guarantee everyone else will be sat outside on the covered deck (with ceiling fan). I’m so torn by this and tempted to just stay home because I’m worried.

ETA: this blew up way more than expected. Nowhere did I ever say my hands would be off of my baby, even if she were in a float. We have never used one before and I practice caution. I also never said we were absolutely going to the pool. This was an information gathering post late at night before I made the decision to call her pediatrician this morning. I’m honestly not even going to call because we are staying home. I am excited to take my baby in the pool finally, after everything we’ve been through in the last year, but it can wait. Thank you for those of you who were kind and providing me with your experience, that’s all I was looking for.

Car seat suggestions

My baby is currently in the Cybex infant seat with rotating base. She’s about 17lb and 28” long. I find myself no longer removing it from the car because it’s just too heavy and cumbersome, so I want to start looking at new seats. Another reason is that she is always hanging her head in the car, I assume doing her “crunches” and trying to sit up, look further out the window/at her lap but it freaks me out that she could get tired and not pull her 97th percentile head back upright. She’s a preemie in PT for muscle tightness and torticollis. I find myself constantly reaching back there to put her head back up. If she’s awake she just tucks it back down but if she’s asleep I’m readjusting her constantly and it is unsafe for me to constantly be paying attention to her like that while I’m driving. I had her fit checked in here and it’s fine so I’m not sure how else to remedy this but to get her into a convertible seat. Not looking to spend a ton but would definitely love to keep the rotating aspect.

Sleep falling apart

My babe has always been a good sleeper. She’s a preemie born 28 weeks. Now just about 8 months (5 adjusted). She stopped consistently waking for night feeds about a month and a half to two months ago.

She has been working on sitting, rolling and we’ve started purées. Now she’s waking every 2-3 hours. I can sometimes get her back down with just a rocking cuddle but often offer a small bottle and she drinks it right up. She drinks about 27-37oz formula per day, it has been increasing lately. I assume from burning the extra calories with all the physical milestones she’s meeting. I don’t feed to sleep for naps and usually can hit the sweet spot where she’s asleep within 2-3 min of rocking/cuddling and transfer to crib.

Up until the last 2 weeks or so for naps, I could occasionally put her in the crib drowsy and give butt pats and shush, and she’d roll to her side and fall asleep but now she throws her arm out and flops back onto her back.

Am I hitting a late regression or shitty sleep from all the activity she’s getting now? Stay the course and keep things consistent or try something new? I got so spoiled with her sleeping in 10-11hr a night, going backwards is tough. I’m totally uninterested in sleep training, which is why I’m here. I want to respond to her needing me but I know she’s fully capable of getting longer stretches so how do I support her with this?

Cybex

Fit check, please. My little one had a growth spurt and I adjusted her the video I saw on YouTube. Does this look OK? Weight 16.5lb unsure of height but probably around 26”

ETA: the harness is below shoulders.
We’ve also been struggling with her head tipping forward when asleep. Sometimes when awake she’ll crunch, she’s working on sitting and does the crunches constantly when on the floor. It freaks me out when she does it in her seat and then fall asleep tipped forward. It’s so unsafe for me to be reaching back to fix her head. Is there any adjustments that would help?

Are these teeth?!

Are these teeth about to pop? I keep checking my almost 8mo mouth and these white bits were not there the other day! No fussiness or anything. I apologize if this isn’t the right sub. Most of the parenting subs you can’t post photos in anymore.

Starting solids

I’m looking to hear from preemie parents who are past their introduction to solids period. It is tough to find information on this topic that feels relevant to us!

My LO was born at 28 weeks. She’s now 7 months old and almost 5 months corrected. Her pediatrician gave us the go ahead to introduce solids whenever I’m ready. We’re in PT working through some motor delays and torticollis but she is a super star and she’s progressing so well! Sometime this summer, we’ll be starting a mix of BLW and purees.

I’d love to hear how this went for you and your preemie!
