Has anyone experienced sudden aggression in a cat after bringing home used furniture?
My boyfriend’s cat is a calico (spayed female, 3 years old) and has always been the sweetest cat ever. Super affectionate, playful, cuddly , never aggressive. But everything changed this Thursday after we brought home a new couch.
We bought the couch from Facebook Marketplace because the listing said it came from a pet-free home. We kept it in the garage downstairs first and cleaned it section by section before bringing it into the apartment. Wednesday night we brought one small section upstairs, and Thursday morning she was laying on it like everything was normal.
But throughout Thursday, as I was cleaning more cushions and bringing more sections upstairs, her entire behavior changed. She went from playing and acting normal to suddenly hissing at me like I had done something to her. Then my boyfriend came home and it didn’t change — she was angry at both of us too.
We called the vet, and because she normally takes gabapentin (100mg) and trazodone (50mg) before vet visits, they recommended giving that to help calm her down. It definitely helped, at night she came and slept with us like normal. But the next morning as we gave her her favorite treat, out of nowhere, she went right back to being aggressive and hissing again.
Now it’s been repeating like this: nighttime she come and sleeps on the bed cuddly, sleeps with us, acts normal. Morning/daytime = aggressive, hissing, acting like she’s terrified or angry. We also started using Feliway Optimum per the vet’s recommendation. But nothing has changed, she still acts aggressive out of nowhere, and now goes and hide under the bed.
One thing that worries me: while cleaning the couch we actually found some dog/cat hair on it despite being told it came from a pet-free home. I’m wondering if another animal scent somehow triggered this?
Has anyone dealt with something similar? Did another animal’s scent on furniture cause a reaction like this? Should we just get rid of the couch at this point, or is there something else we should try?
Any advice would be appreciated because this behavior change has been so sudden and completely unlike her.
