Grade 7 Sexual Health - Students' Distress

Hi!

I’m a fairly new teacher who teaches Grade 7 Health, which includes sexual health education.

Our sexual health curriculum covers topics such as puberty, safer sex, contraception, STIs, consent, gender diversity, gender-based violence, and online safety.

I’ve noticed that my male students seem to be much more uncomfortable discussing sexual health and puberty than I expected.

This past year I had multiple boys refuse to attend sexual health classes, even when their parents wanted them to participate. This year, about 50% of the boys tried to get out of the unit. While the girls were all fine with participating.

Many were so uncomfortable that they tried to leave or avoid the class. Their parents had to speak with them to tell them they had to participate.

The reactions have sometimes been extreme. One student threw a chair because he had label a diagram of a penis. Another student had to call to go home after feeling sick because we talked about what an IUD was.

I expected students to be silly, embarrassed, uncomfortable. But I didn’t expect was: fainting, crying, running away, refusal, and even throwing furniture.

I’m curious whether other teachers have noticed this as well. Is this generational difference, or am I just unusually uncomfortable group of Grade 7 students? Also does anyone have any suggestions for how to navigate this in the future?

My doctor looked at my blood panel and told me not to worry about my high cholesterol.

Hi,

I am a 37 year old female. 5’6 112lbs . Who has been vegetarian since age 13. I eat a high fibre diet (rye bread, fibre one, multigrain bread regularly) and a lot of vegetables. I do drink decaf coffee a few times a week with cream in it. I eat eggs a few times a week (so usually 1-3 eggs per week). I eat foods with cheese less than once a week. I eat potato chips a few times a week. I don‘t eat out regularly.

I am somewhat active. I dont do vigorous exercise but I walk my dog everyday and am on my feet at work.

My father had high cholesterol from his early 20s onward. I have also have had high cholesterol since my early 20s but because it was mostly good cholesterol, doctors told me not to worry.

I recently had a blood panel done and it showed I have high bad cholesterol. My doctor told me not to worry about it or change anything because “You are young still and don’t have heart disease”

I am wondering if I should seek out a second opinion. Because high cholesterol causes heart disease? Also, I am worried it could be genetic considering my lifestyle.

Also, I am at a loss as to what I could cut out of my diet to reduce my cholesterol. Other than coffee cream.

Where to find Hypoallergenic Jewelry (Gold coloured) that doesn’t break the bank.

Hi! I am (or used to be) really into wearing a lot of jewelry and matching my jewelry to my outfit.

Looking for brand or product recommendations from other allergic folks for places to buy jewelry that won't make my ears swell up like a balloon or make my skin itch and that will actually last.

But I have developed an allergy to anything not made of pure silver, steel or gold. There may be other exceptions but so far this is what I have found I don't react to.

I am allergic to any jewelry that is made out of mixed metals, even a lot of the jewelry that is labelled "hypoallergenic" but still not made of the above metals.

I keep buying jewelry that is gold plated but loses its plating very quickly. Maybe due to my body chemistry. And am getting tired of having to repurchase jewelry that costs an arm and a leg just to have it last a few months.

If anyone has a recommendations for where I could buy large lightweight gold hoop earrings that would last you would be my hero.

And looking for recommendations for rings/necklaces that won't make my neck/fingers itch or turn green.

Brands I have tried and liked or:

  • Vitaly
  • Studio Cult

Brands that I have tried and/or either caused reaction or didn't last:

  • Noir Kala
  • Regal Rose

Thanks!
