Puffer for an old Helly Hanson shell?

I have a Helly Hanson shell that I bought in Montreal 30 years ago, back when the exchange rate was favorable and HH wasn’t super expensive.

I have a cheap fleece that I use as a liner just because it’s zipper matched the shell. It’s not perfect and since the fleece isn’t made for the shell there’s a gap in the fleece on either side of the shells zipper.

In the winter I usually wear a heavy Carhartt with a fleece underneath. But I’m getting tired of the weight and the bulk.

I’d like a puffer I can use in the shell and on its own as the weather allows. We get cold in late September here, snow as early as late October, and it always snows in April and sometimes May.

Can anyone recommend a puffer or liner that may be compatible and won’t cost an arm and a leg?

Hocking Hills tick situation

We’re headed to Hocking Hills in a couple of weeks.

The ticks are pretty bad 3-4 hours away, just wondering if that’s the case in HH.

Nurses (specifically) who hike, what’s in your first aid kit?

I’m an RN with an ICU/ED background.

I’m starting to hike with my wife and teenagers. We just do short day hikes in state parks or national forests. Nothing strenuous, nothing overnight or in the back country.

I am building my kit for hiking and I’m wondering what you all carry.

I’ve got bandaids, alcohol preps, 2” and 4” ace wraps, a few 4x4s, an ABD pad, steri-strips, some Vaseline gauze, a few medium sized Mepliex, Kerlix, Coban, shears, CPR mask, OTC meds, duoderm for blisters, gloves, tape, and hand sanitizer.

I could add a CAT tourniquet but I think that’s overkill and I can make a tourniquet out of my other stuff if necessary.

I’m also thinking about adding an oral and an nasopharyngeal airway.

What are your thoughts? What and I missing or what should I remove?

Mountainsmith Tour vs Tour EVO

I’ve decided to try a lumbar pack for light day hikes, and the ones from Mountainsmith seem like they’re the best option/price for me.

I just can’t decide between the Tour and the Tour EVO.

I don’t use MOLLE gear and I’m not into tactical stuff. I’m also not going to be hunting or anything.

But I’m not sure if the extra loops and stuff will eventually come in handy. I also like that the delta straps on the sides look easier access on the EVO.

I don’t know if those are good reasons to go with the EVO.

Any thoughts, suggestions, or recommendations would be gratefully received.

Which is the coolest and highest quality option?

Ok, you all talked me out of a pure mechanical chronograph.

I’ve found three different chronographs with the VK63 Mecha-Quartz movements and they’re all water resistant to 100 meters, so from that standpoint they’re the same.

I already own a yacht master parody from the same company. Based on my experience with Repax, they probably have the best bracelet.

The speedys are priced within $10 of each other, the panda is more than double. The speedys are also a little thinner and have a smaller case diameter which is fine since I have a 6.5-6.75” wrist (I had to take two links out of my yacht master). I’m inclined to put a Velcro strap on whichever I pick.

So what say you all?

Hand wound chronograph

Does anyone make an affordable (>$500) hand wound chronograph?

I see a lot of mecha-quartz or straight up mechanicals out there, but I’d prefer to never change a battery. Same goes for eco drives, eventually the battery is going to quit, or so I’m told.

I’d like to get as close to a Speedmaster esthetic as possible.

Sharpening systems question

I’ve got a $150 gift card burning a hole in my pocket.

I’ve got a pretty well equipped shop, but I don’t know how to sharpen. So I’ve never been able to really sharpen my chisels the way I’d like.

I’ve got a good whetstone that my father used and he could keep knives razor sharp. I just don’t have the knack.

I’d also like to be able to sharpen my planer and jointer blades when I need to. I primarily turn with carbide but I inherited some HSS tools that I’d like to use and maintain as well. I wouldn’t mind sharpening my kitchen knives as well.

I’m looking for recommendations. I’m just an occasional hobbyist, I’m never going to pursue it beyond that. I’m just in it for fun.

All advice, thoughts, and opinions will gratefully welcomed.
