I'm a 25M, and a situationship ended a couple of months ago. The hardest part is that it wasn't even an official relationship, yet it's been the most painful thing I've ever experienced.
We started as close friends. We talked every day, spent countless hours together, and eventually things became physical. Somewhere along the way, I fell in love.
She cared about me too, but we both knew we didn't see a long-term future together. We convinced ourselves we were okay with that and stayed in the situationship for about a year because, in the moment, it worked. Looking back, I think we were both holding on for different reasons. I was terrified of the day she'd leave, and she couldn't give me what I secretly hoped for.
At the same time, everything else in my life felt like it was falling apart. I had just graduated, and I'm still struggling to find a job before my work authorization runs out. On top of that, I was dealing with housing issues, financial stress, and the constant uncertainty of whether I'd even get to stay in the US.
Then, almost overnight, she disappeared. She was out of country for 4 months and took my emotional support secretly while preparing to move on without giving hints, and I was there for her without hesitation. But as soon as she landed here and settled in, she asked for no contact and disappeared.
She became the person I leaned on when everything else felt uncertain. Now I'm trying to rebuild my life and focus on myself, but it's incredibly hard to do that when I'm carrying this heartbreak while also feeling the pressure of finding a job. It often feels like my mind is split between grieving someone I lost and trying to survive everything else that's happening.
That part has been the hardest to make sense of. I don't resent her, and I know she had every right to make that decision. I just struggle to understand why I was someone she could lean on when she needed me, but someone she could completely walk away from afterward. I never got any real closure, and I still catch myself wondering what I did wrong.
It felt like I lost more than a person. I lost the place I went whenever life became overwhelming.
Since everything ended, I've found myself constantly seeking validation, questioning whether I was ever enough, replaying conversations, looking for hidden meanings, and searching for answers that probably don't exist. I hate how much of my self-worth became tied to someone who chose not to stay, but I don't know how to break out of that cycle.
I don't hate her. I don't blame her. She was honest about not wanting a future together, and I respect that. But I still can't understand how someone can leave such a huge impact on your life without ever officially being your partner.
The hardest part is that I already know what I'm supposed to do.
I know I should stop replaying old conversations.
I know I should stop imagining different outcomes.
I know I should focus on myself.
I know I should let time do its job.
But it's like my brain refuses to cooperate.
Every morning I wake up with this mental fog. I can't focus. I'll sit down to work, apply for jobs, or do something productive, and within minutes my mind drifts back to her. The memories come without me inviting them. It's exhausting.
It feels like my logical brain has accepted that it's over, but my emotional brain is still waiting for something that isn't coming.
If this experience taught me anything, it's that I'm capable of loving someone deeply. But right now, that love feels like it's keeping me stuck instead of helping me grow.
So I wanted to ask people who've genuinely been through something similar:
Did anyone else experience this constant brain fog after a breakup or situationship?
How did you stop obsessing when you already knew all the "right" advice?
Was there a point where your brain finally let go, or was it just incredibly gradual?
What actually helped you move forward when motivation wasn't the problem, but your mind simply wouldn't let go?
I'm not really looking for clichés like "just keep busy" or "time heals everything." I already know those things.
I think I'm looking for people who understand what it feels like when your mind knows it's over, but your heart refuses to catch up.
Hey everyone,
I’m a 25M moving from New York City to the Wilmington / Newark, DE area for a new job and I’m looking for either:
I’m ideally looking around Wilmington, Trolley Square, Riverfront, Downtown, North Wilmington, or anywhere with good access to I-95 and a reasonable commute toward Newark / Wilmington.
A little about me: I’m clean, respectful, easygoing, and big on respecting personal space. I like watching sports, especially soccer, F1, and NBA. I’m also into hiking, exploring new places, house music, techno, and other EDM genres. I have a small DJ mixer too, so I mess around with that sometimes, but I’m mindful about noise and shared space.
Open to living with male or female roommates, as long as you’re clean, respectful, responsible, and chill.
Also, if you don’t have a room or aren’t looking for an apartment, I’m still open to meeting people and making friends in the area with similar interests. Would love to connect with people who are into sports, hiking, music, EDM shows, or just exploring around Wilmington / Philly.
If you’re also looking for a 2B2B, know of any available apartments/rooms starting in August, or just want to connect, feel free to message me. Happy to chat and see if it’s a good fit.
