Reimbursement for Rebooked Flights

Hey all,

On an international trip and this morning woke up to find me AA flight had been delayed 21 hours due to a mechanical issue, which was not doable for me.

Was told by an AA agent to directly book a different carrier's one way flight that would get me to my destination as planned ($1.3k ticket), complete the trip, and then request a refund. Importantly, I made clear I still needed the return portion of the flight to the agent before they gave me that information.

After making it to the airport, I was informed by another AA agent that my return flight would be cancelled if I did not check in for the AA flight that was delayed 20 hours. They then informed me to keep that return flight, I would have to cancel and rebook the same return flight as a one way at current rates, an additional $2k beyond my original round trip cost.

In short, my original $1.3k round trip turned into an additional $1.3k for the outbound with Delta and $2k for the return booked thru American and incurred this expense as a direct result of receiving agent misinformation.

Any similar experiences or recommendations for how to pursue reimbursement? I booked this trip in January, so pretty jarring for my flight bill to essentially 4x in the span of an hour.

Interruption Insurance Best Course of Action

I'm separately pursuing reimbursement from AA, but am not confident given I've received terrible customer service from them so far.

As this was all booked with my Platinum, is the additional spend something y'all think would be covered via Interruption insurance? I've already submitted a ticket, so curious if anyone has had any similar experiences and advice.
