Please no book references or spoilers of the Testaments beyond S1E7

I almost don't remember the Mackenzies on THT, it must have been many seasons ago, did the show go any deep into them, in the Hannah/Agnes related scenes?

On the Testaments it turns out that Agnes' stepfather disapproves of the shitshow that Gilead is, which doesn't suit a man of his status. I don't know where this comes from. It doesn't feel like good writing, or I'm missing something.

Also, where did Paula come from into the show, did we know her on THT? What happened to the first wife of Mr.Mackenzie?

Sorry I'm feeling a bit stupid to not remember things accurately, but it's been a few years now and so many characters/actors.
