[Help] Toddler climbed on open microwave door. Tripped the breaker, now it won't latch and displays "Door". (Pics attached)
Hey r/appliancerepair,
I'm hoping someone can help me figure out if this is fixable or if I need to just bite the bullet and buy a new microwave.
The Story: My 1-year-old daughter decided to use the open microwave door as a step stool and climbed on it while my back was turned. After I got her down, I realized the door was misaligned and wouldn't close.
My Troubleshooting Timeline:
- I tried to realign the door and push it closed. It finally closed with a bit of force, but the main kitchen breaker tripped immediately the second the door shut.
- I flipped the breaker back on and tried closing the door again. It tripped the breaker a second time.
- I figured the hinges were completely off, so I completely removed the door and reinstalled it to adjust the fit.
- Now, the door physically closes without forcing it, but it will not lock/latch.
- When I try to press start, the microwave display just reads "door" and refuses to run.
So right now, I'm stuck with a door that won't click shut and a microwave that won't run.
I've attached some pictures of the door, the hinges, and the latch mechanism. Has anyone dealt with this before? Did forcing it closed crush the interlock switches, or is this just a broken latch/hinge issue that I can replace?
Any advice or part recommendations would be hugely appreciated! Thanks in advance.
