Loving the Monitor III :D

Hi guys, just wanna share my lovely experience with the Monitor III

UPGRADES

Firstly, this is a much needed upgrade of the Monitor series. There's finally some bass and the cusions are so comfyy. Improved ANC and battery life is a huge win too. ANC ain't close to Sony or Bose, but it's enough and not too aggressive.

Preferences

As someome who loves Enya's songs and instrumentals, this is a God-sent in the sea of overly V-shaped tuned headphones. Monitor's V-shape seem to be just nice. Just a nice hill rather than a mountain (red line). Vocals and instruments pop pretty nicely. Only issue with the tuning is that sometimes sounds sibilant, but sliding down 6.25kHz in the EQ helps.

Soundstage feature

It's alright. It does make vocals and rock somewhat feel like im in a concert. It has a reverb effect, but the actual soundstage doesn't seem to be affected by much. I dialed mine at 30% for small room. Too much made music sound echoish and the bass muddy.

Customized EQ

Every now and then I do listen to EDM and other elctronic music, so my customized EQ boosts the bass region (green line) Decided to set the M-button to toggle between default and customized EQ when I change from vocal/instruments to electronic. 6.25kHz dialed down too.

Overall happy with the performance. Slapped in an additional year of warranty because batteries will die at some point and given how much i'll be using these, I do see it happening in 2 years.

I was actually considering Sennheiser's Momentum 4/5, but the tuning sounded too clinical. Would have bought Bower's Px7 S3 if I had the money though

Finally some bass...but the dip though

After 2 weeks of no bass, I finally got my hands on this Wharfedale D9 SW100.

Using REW, I heard audible bass from just the KEF eggs down to 80Hz and a peak around 125Hz (yellow) thanks to room gain. Strangely, adding my subwoofer seems to have caused a dip in the 85Hz (purple). It just so happens the crossover for the subwoofer is at 85Hz

Environment:
3m by 4.5m bedroom
Desktop use, table is drilled into the wall

Any way to fix this dip?

Good market find?

Hi guys, I found a listing for a 5.1.2 hometheatre set for 380SGD (300USD)

  • Denon AVR-X1300W
  • Sony SA-W10G subwoofer
  • Whaferdale Valus 400 (L/R)
  • Kenwood CRS-156 (SR/SL/C)
  • Onkyo SKH-410 (Heights)

I have no need for the speakers as I'm already using KEF for my bed layer, and all I need is a decent Atmos amplifier for my bedroom. Not into the streaming or wifi features. Just basic surrounds, heights, and some form of room correction. Video output will be coming straight from my computer's GPU into my monitor, so I'm not too concerned about video passthrough.

So I'm thinking of buying the set and selling off the speakers. Could I get my 380 back?

Crossover tips for 3001SE for desk use

Hi guys, this is my first time using REW. Above is the in-room response (yellow curve) of my 3001SE eggs I've been using as desktop speakers. Thanks to wall and desk boundary gain, there's quite a gain in the 100Hz - 200Hz region. Thinking of getting a subwoofer because audio below 80Hz is hardly audible (apart from the 60Hz spike). Should I crossover at 80Hz, or as many have suggested, 100Hz/120Hz?

Yellow cruve - in-room response, near field, 50cm from both speakers, 10 degress off axis
Green curve - 7cm from speaker driver, on axis
Microphone - cheap uncalibrated microphone hanging on my Koss Porta Pro

Budget Uni-Q 😋

Always wanted a KEF speaker for my desktop, but retail and even second hand prices seemed out of reach :(

UNTIL NOW because these were going at $200 for 4 pieces! These eggs (HTS3001SE) have a build quality I've never seen in speakers below the 1k mark. And these soundstage and layering is phenomenal.

DARE I SAY these are better than the LSX in mids and highs. I'll probably get a subwoofer real soon because these have practically no lower-mid bass.

Gonna use all 4 eggs for a the bed layer of a soon to be 4.1.2 set up in my room! Wish me luck :D

Subwoofer for small room

Hello people as the title suggests, I need help picking a subwoofer. My room is not exacalty ideal and I want to make the best out of it

Room measures about 3m by 4m (12m^(2)/130sqrft) with build-in furniture that I can't really move around. All corners have been taken up by furniture and the only place left is under my desk. It'll be near the front wall and right beside the clothes cabinet. However, I am a little worried about too much of a boomy bass. I want a good low end (35hz) without exploding the higher bass (100hz>). Here are some questions:

  1. In such a small space, do large subs (more than 8 inch) really matter? Could a 6 inch sub suffice?

  2. Ported vs sealed enclosure, which might be better?

I am looking at the KEF HTB2 on the used market as I like the slim form factor. Another I've been looking at is the Edifier T5s, but I heard those are terrible by audiophile standards. I don't really like big black boxes as I like freedom for my feet. Something slim would be nice. Any suggestions?

I'll definitely do some EQing along with software based room correction but I'm thinking picking the right sub would help as well

Should I still get a SoundBlaster internal soundcard?

Hi guys, here for some advise on getting an internal soundcard. Here's the context: I've been wanting to get surround sound for gaming and for listening to Atmos tracks, so I thought it'd be good to go from my multichannel analog motherboard to motherboard with optical. Back on Windows 10 it could somehow decode Atmos into multichannel PCM. But after upgrading to Windows 11 and getting my hands on a new motherboard, the whole multichannel thing kinda disappeared. Does not even appear on Realtek. On top of this, I heard AMD CPUs will cause audio issues with SoundBlaster internal/external soundcards.

Current rig is a MSI MAG B850 motherboard with a 7800x3D. I don't fully understand how PCIe lane sharing works, but I intend to use the 3.0 slot since the lane sharing issue might not affect the sound as much???

I really love the the idea of a dedicated hardware for audio processing as I am somewhat of an audio enthusiast and I think it'll look cool as well. if it really does not work out, I am considering just using HDMI out from my GPU to stream Atmos into a receiver.
