Aan het begin van de zomer hebben wij een Mini Cooper S Cabrio uit 2006 gekocht. Ik wilde al langer een hobbyauto en keek aanvankelijk naar een R53 ('gewone' Cooper S) als projectje. Vrouwlief gaf echter aan dat ze een vierzits cabrio wel zag zitten, om samen of met de kids uitjes te maken.

De Mini is in eerste instantie aangeschaft als 3e auto, naast onze Focus station (gezinswagen) en een C1. Het idee was om de zomer aan te zien, kijken of de Mini een bevlieging was en/of er nog lijken uit de kast kwamen. Dit is echter niet het geval, het is een vreselijk leuk autootje (sper en sportonderstel af fabriek) en technisch staat hij er prima bij. We overwegen nu dus de C1 de deur uit te doen en de Mini als 2e auto aan te houden.

Ik twijfel echter nog een beetje over het rijden van een cabrio in de winter. Ik ben bang voor continu beslagen ruiten omdat ze toch nooit precies zo vochtdicht zijn als een dichte auto, of dat ze moeilijk warm te stoken zijn ivm mindere isolatie. Zijn dit terechte twijfels of maak ik me zorgen om niks en moet ik gewoon gaan met die banaan?

Een optie die nog in mijn achterhoofd zit is om de C1 en de Mini allebei aan te houden, en dan om en om schorsen. Dan heb ik echter wel een stallingsplek nodig, en die zijn niet goedkoop als ze al te vinden zijn. Voor m'n caravan ben ik al €500 op jaarbasis kwijt, en dit zal vergelijkbaar zijn. Die krijg ik thuis moeilijk verkocht vrees ik.

Euro Mini driver here. We've got a Ford Focus estate as the family hauler and a Citroën C1 as second car. A project car has been a dream of mine for a longer time already, and I had my eyes set on a R53 to fix up. My wife however suggested getting a R52, as it could be used for sunday family drives as well and could replace the C1. I stopped listening after 'we could get a R52' of course, and found one online which is ours now since a month or two. Love the car, it came with LSD and sport suspension from factory and was fitted with a nice custom brown leather interior by one of the previous owners.

We decided we'd keep the three cars for the summer, and decide which ones would stay at the end of summer. The novelty of the R52 could wear off or there could be technical issues with it, which is why we didn't get rid of the C1 right away. Neither happened though, we still love the little thing and its proven to be a solid car.
So from that point of view we're now looking at getting rid of the C1, and make the R52 our second car. However, I have some doubts about running it in the winter. It's 2006 model, top is still fine, no problems with leaks in the rain. My biggest fear though is moist in the car we can't get rid of and lack of insulation preventing the cabin from getting hot enough. Also, our cars are stored out in the open, no carport or garage unfortunately.

So redditors who drive their convertables all year long, what are your experiences? Should I put the R52 in storage for winter and get a beater for those months? Or am I overthinking this, should I slap some wintertires on it and send it? Winters aren't to strict here, mostly wet and windy, with the occasional snow. But nothing of the Scandinavian variety.
