First Kayak success

Haven’t been fishing in over 3 years, let alone out on the water fishing in at least 12. I used to go constantly up until my father passed. That was our thing. After that I went here and there from shore, but never found any real joy in it.

Im 33 and have a 2 month old son. He’s been everything to me. He’s gotten me looking back at the things I did as a kid that I miss. My Wife and I have a deal where we each get some alone time at least once per week to help our mental health now that things are so busy. I found what I needed to do.

Last week, I all of a sudden got this itch so bad that I needed to go fishing. It couldn’t be from shore, it HAD to be out on the water. All I found on marketplace were $2,000 Jon boats and aluminum row boats that all needed work. I do not have time for a project lol. My wife vetoed a decent boat for now (understandable), so I turned to kayaks. I knew I wanted something that was cheap just to get out on the water.

After scouring forums and Reddit, reading the arguments of why you shouldn’t get a sit in and the people who said to avoid Ascend like the plague, I got one. I went and got an Ascend 10si from Basspro. $499 for the kayak, paddle and crate. Could not beat that!

Came home, got my gear together and was on the pond down the road from my house within a couple hours. I had fished on this pond 15 years prior (lived a town over) and lost a MONSTER large mouth on a black and gold Slug-Go. That moment stuck with me.

Getting out there was a feeling I haven’t felt in years. It lit a fire in me that I’m so happy to have back. I caught two small largemouth on a senko wacky rig and one medium on a top water frog. What a blast!

I got out all my tackle to go through today. My son was relaxing in his bouncer as I showed him baits and
explained what they do. Gotta start him early. His reactions to my stash were all a content stare, mostly at the ceiling fan.

I am beyond stoked to have the bug again. I cannot wait to teach my son this amazing sport and I look forward to making so many memories.
