Is Jacksonville known as a bass fishing destination ? Conflicted on visiting Fellsmere or Jacksonville

Me and my buddy both 28 year old males from California are planning to go fishing at lake purdy this coming July. Neither one of us have been to the south before except Texas. We are mainly planning our trip to go bass fishing. A few questions about Birmingham , where are some areas you encourage to visit , areas to avoid , good places to get food , and any fun nightlife ?
