Most Misunderstood encounter in one piece is

(PLEASE READ FULL BEFORE ENGAGING)

There is a lot of misunderstood and outright false rhetoric surrounding Kid vs Shanks, mainly because people flatten the encounter into “Kid arrogantly challenged Shanks and got one shot” while ignoring almost every important detail surrounding the situation.

First, Kid did not arrogantly seek out Shanks in the way people frame it. He followed his Log Pose. The Log Pose dictates progression. Elbaf was where Kid’s route led him, and once he arrived, he ran directly into a Yonko crew.

People act like Kid could have simply turned around and avoided everything, but that is not how the situation actually worked. Kid cannot just casually reverse direction and continue progressing normally. He needed to make landfall and allow the Log Pose to reset before moving on. The Red Hair fleet was actively occupying the area and blocking his path. He was already in a Yonko-controlled zone.

On top of that, Shanks was not treating this like a neutral passing encounter. He would’ve actively demanded the Road Poneglyph rubbings regardless of kids actions and even referred to Kid showing up as “bad timing” because Shanks himself had begun moving toward the One Piece. That line is important because it shows Both pirates were now directly competing in the same stage of the race.

And even hypothetically, if Kid somehow escaped, from his perspective it accomplishes almost nothing. People confuse arrogance with ambition. At that point in the story, He is not operating with the mindset of someone who plans to spend the rest of his life avoiding Yonko. To actually become Pirate King, you eventually have to fight for progress, fight for territory, and fight for Road Poneglyphs regardless.

That is why the “he should have just backed down” argument misses the entire mentality required to reach the top in One Piece. You cannot surpass Emperors by permanently bowing your head to them every time confrontation becomes dangerous. Kid made an ambitious gamble because ambition is literally what drives the One Piece race. Whether the gamble succeeded or failed does not suddenly make the mentality itself irrational. Luffy repeatedly challenged Kaido despite losing multiple times and literally dying once in the process. And Kid has consistently shown the ability to grow from setbacks. Every major loss in his story pushed him higher afterward instead of mentally breaking him. So from his perspective, why willingly sacrifice your standing in the race when confrontation is inevitable anyway?

The scaling side of the encounter is also massively misunderstood because people analyze it like it was a normal direct fight when it really was not.

Kid was actively calling Shanks out while preparing a large-scale attack aimed toward the fleet. The attack itself was destructive enough that Shanks immediately treated the situation seriously and responded with one of his strongest named techniques before things escalated further. That matters because Shanks did not approach the situation casually at all. He moved instantly to neutralize the threat before Kid could fully unleash his attack.

And people completely ignore how absurd Shanks’ abilities are in this context. Kid had never directly fought Shanks before. There was no realistic way for him to prepare for someone capable of using future sight while simultaneously shutting down his opponent’s observation haki. The entire interaction was extremely situational. Kid was mid attack, focused forward, while Shanks intercepted from outside his direct awareness with one of the strongest haki strikes in the series. And contrary to the “one shot fraud” rhetoric, Kid did not simply get tapped by Divine Departure alone. He took a named Yonko attack while his own Damned Punk simultaneously imploded back onto him. That detail gets ignored constantly.

And the funny part is that the same people who downplay Damned Punk against Big Mom are not even reading that fight properly either. Big Mom was not casually “laughing it off.” She was actively reinforcing herself with aconq and using Soul Pocus simultaneously because she needed to mitigate and overpower the attack while maintaining fear around her. The moment Law silences her, preventing Soul Pocus from functioning properly, she immediately starts getting overwhelmed. Hera literally panics while Big Mom loses control of the situation.

If Big Mom was not already a physically monstrous tank while actively reinforcing herself to survive the attack, Damned Punk would have devastated her even worse. That gives context to what exploded back into Kid during the Shanks encounter. Even if it was not the full complete force of the beam, the initial backlash combined with Divine Departure created a catastrophic layered hit.

So the encounter says far more about Shanks’ experience, timing, haki mastery, and ability to capitalize on openings than it does about Kid secretly being weak. People reduce it to “Kid got one shot because he’s dumb,” when in reality it was an extremely specific and volatile interaction.

By misconceptions I mean writing wise, Situation wise (anything in-story people slander him for), or even scaling wise.

As someone who’s re-reading and has recently caught up

I’ll say mine: Eustass Kid uses his devil fruit exceptionally well and there’s a reason he awakened it. People expect him to be magneto with his devil fruit and to that I’ll say:

  1. With awakening he kinda is

  2. Kid is a brawler who applies an innovative mind and engineering expertise to gather scrap metal and form mechanically complex weapons and contraptions suited for any situation.
