23F in a 5-Year Relationship — How Do You Know When It’s Time to Break Up?

I need advice. I’ve been in a 5-year relationship with someone I’ve known since high school. We’ve been through a lot of highs and lows, but we always end up coming back to the same arguments. We’ve both hurt each other emotionally, and earlier in the relationship (around year 2) he was physically abusive a couple of times too.

I honestly don’t think I’ve ever fully forgiven him for that, and it’s something I’ve never really been able to tell my friends. It feels like this heavy thing I carry around all the time.

Fast forward a few years and things are better. He had anger issues back then, and he apologizes constantly for how he treated me. We’ve improved in some ways, but now I’m stuck wondering if love is enough when we still argue about the same things over and over again.

At this point it’s not even about one specific argument anymore. It just feels exhausting and unhealthy sometimes, and I wonder if we’re toxic for each other even though we also genuinely care about each other.

I don’t really like the culture of just leaving relationships and finding someone new the second things get hard, so I keep questioning myself. But how do you actually know when it’s time to break up? Especially when you’ve gone through so much together and taken breaks before?

We haven’t spoken in a few days, and honestly I feel desperate and confused. How do you know what’s best for you in situations like this?
