I built a dotted world map because I thought it'd look cool. Then realized my camera roll could fill it in.

Started building a dotmap of the world because I thought it would look cool. Then it hit me: I could use my camera roll to populate it with every country I've been to.

A few weeks later it had turned into an app that scans your photos and dots your travels on the map.

It's called Dotted. Most people remember half their trips. Your photos remember all of them.

You point it at your camera roll, it scans on-device, and trips start dropping onto the map one by one. First time I ran it on my own library I ended up scrolling through every trip looking at old photos for an hour.

A timeline shows your trips year by year. Stats show how much of the world you've covered. Share cards turn it into something you can post. For older trips that predate your camera roll, you can fill those in manually.

Everything runs on-device. No accounts, no uploads, no servers. Your photos never leave your phone.

Would love to see your maps too, and hear which forgotten trip showed up first if you try it.

A — Answer (what it does)

Most people can't remember every country they've been to. Your photos can.

Dotted scans your camera roll on-device and plots every country you've visited onto a dotted world map. Trips you'd forgotten show up on their own. The first time I ran it on my own library I found a few I'd completely lost track of.

A year-by-year timeline, stats on how much of the world you've covered, home screen widgets, and share cards round it out. Older trips that predate your camera roll can be added manually.

B — Better (why use it over alternatives)

  • Most travel trackers make you enter every trip by hand. Dotted populates from your photos automatically.
  • Fully on-device. No accounts, no uploads, no servers. Photos never leave your phone.
  • Dot-style map and share cards built to actually look good when posted on social.
  • Native SwiftUI, iOS 18+. CloudKit sync between devices, no third-party backend.
  • Built and maintained solo.

C — Cost

  • Free to download and fully usable for tracking trips and viewing the map.
  • Dotted Pro: $2.99/month or $19.99/year. Pro unlocks widgets, deeper stats, multiple upcoming trips, and more.
  • No ads. No tracking. No data collection.
