Petrified of subbing for HS
I usually keep my sub assignments to elementary school/intermediate since I have better classroom management for little kids and given my age (F22) it’s easier to get control/respect, plus I love working with the little boogers!
However I had a sub assignment as a high school floater and was placed in special education for students who have behavioral issues.
I wasn’t made aware of certain classroom management the teacher allows: let’s one student walk around and sit in an office chair, let’s the other one eat candy, etc.
Which is all fine by me, but they did all of that without maintaining boundaries. The student was riding in the chair, the two students were throwing candy at each other, generally being disruptive.
When I told the student to sit in a desk away from the peer because throwing candy and touching each other Isn’t acceptable, he called me a bitch and ignored me when I tried to have a conversation with him.
I don’t mind working together to compromise with a student but I don’t want to come off as soft and a push over by letting students do whatever if it isn’t listed in the notes.
From what I understand other teachers aren’t a fan of her management as it impacts the behavior and how the other students treat their peers.
Beyond that, I was in another class where a student made sexual comments to a male teacher about “how he touches down with the ladies” and if he makes it to third base and takes them home for the night. Then the student proceeded to target me in a conversation about his attraction to the girls at the school and made an announcement about how he wants to get freshmen girls to come home with him.
I’m over it and I forgot how bad high school was, but it rubs me the wrong way how the teacher didn’t really intervene or correct what he was saying. But then again how do you even deal with this.
