God and Kings (and coups)

After trying it out, and posting about how much I liked it, I moved from vanilla to Gods and Kings. Yeah, that was a mistake. Since it was my first time for this version, I played Prince, standard size pangea, 8 civs

I don't know if I just got some difficult leaders, but it seemed like every other turn Theodora or Alexander or one of the others was staging a coup in a city state I just bribed or finished a task for. By around the halfway point, I gave up giving them any money or doing favors.

About a third of the coup attempts failed, but they did it so often that hardly mattered. Back to neutral we go. Again.

The other thing was something I've seen in BNW too. Inexplicable fluctuations in GPT. I don't mean the difference between golden age earnings and normal age. I mean one normal turn I'm making 12 gpt, then I'm suddenly down to negative 3 without any new units or adding more than one or two new buildings.

In BNW I always assumed it was trade routes from other civs, but that doesn't happen with Gods and Kings.

I kept looking at what tiles the cities were working, but no explanation there either.

Then there was the mystery of the impotently violent Elizabeth. As my close neighbor, she declared war on me three times over 70 or so turns. Okay, sure. Why not. But the first two times she sent one single unit at me before asking for peace, and the third time three. I had a dozen upgraded units near our border the whole time. And every time I gave her the peace treaty, her attitude toward me was Friendly.

By the third time, I took two of her cities to let her know she needed to stop declaring war on me. Then her attitude degraded to neutral.

TL/DR Non-stop coup attempts and far too many succeeded. Weird gpt fluctuations. AI behavior even worse than I'm used to.

Just started playing Vanilla after 1,000 hours of BNW, and I'm loving it.

After reading some comments here, I'd been meaning to for a while. I genuinely love this version. For one thing, I do not miss the World Congress. Nobody can ban my luxury items (!) one after another after another, or embargo City States or make theirs the World Religion.

Plus, no hordes of missionaries swarming my cities.

Overall, the game just feels a lot faster. More streamlined.

I was on the verge of trying Civ 7 to mix things up a bit, but this version and Gods and Kings should keep me entertained for a while, maybe long enough for them to release an Anthology type version of 7 as they did with Civ 6.

Sell off buildings that are no longer needed?

I started thinking about this from a Just One More Turn point of view, achieving a victory type but sticking around to settle some grudges. There are some buildings that just aren't needed anymore and only eat up gold that could buy units, support a huge army, or bribe city states.

It also occurs to me that things like the hotels for National Visitor Center or Police Stations and Constabularies needed for National Intelligence Agency, to name a couple, could (?) be sold off as soon as those national wonders are built.

Is there a reason to not do that?

Unable to purchase Great people in a city without a religion. Bug or working as intended? BNW

Current game, three of my four cities were converted to computer civ religions (I never founded one), but my capital never got a majority religion, only my pantheon.

The three following a religion can purchase the great people I gained access to via policies, but my capital can't.

This is the first time I've seen that happen, and I'm wondering if it's a bug or if it's supposed to be this way.

The computer civs are such miserable little psychos that Now I understand so many people only playing domination

I'd taken off several months before my last couple of games and I'd managed to forget how shitty the computer civs are, even game-long "friends".

From late middle game onward they just do not stop. I think it's time to join the domination crowd. Or maybe just flat out conquest.

[show spoilers] The series finale was a very odd choice because:

>!It spat in the face of all the sacrifices and tribulation that every character went though the entire series.!<

>!I always knew I didn't like that part, but never worked out why.!<

>!Thinking about it last night, I realized that there was nothing that any main characters suffered which wasn't directly or indirectly related to trying to save Fillory.!<

>!The only reason the Beast went after the group was to keep them from interfering with his taking over Fillory. !<

>!Julia was thrown out of Brakebills as a way to try defeating the Beast. If she doesn't get thrown out, she doesn't meet Reynard, and Penny 40 doesn't die from the poison room sickness after getting a book Kady needed to kill Renard.!<

>!Magic was turned off due to Quentin killing Umber so Umber wouldn't destroy Fillory. !<

>!If magic doesn't get turned off, the Library's and the Mcallisters siphon and power trip idiocy never happens. The Monster never gets let out of the castle to possess Elliot because the group never needs to go to the castle.!<

>!If the Monster never escapes the castle, Everett never tries to use the Monster's essence to become a god, so that's two reasons that Quentin is never in a position to die at the rift in the mirror world.!<

>!And on and on.!<

>!Every shitty thing they went through was a result of trying to save Fillory, and how do the writers end the series?!<

>!They destroy Fillory. !<

>!But the new place has Pizza Trees, so I guess that makes it all okay.!<

Despite set to "Remind Me Later" I get auto Prophet purchases early to mid game

Always been this way as I recall. I just started playing the game again, and there it is again.

It's happening early to mid game. Only once or twice before the game finally lets the faith accumulate, but that's still a lot of points being used wastefully.

Could I be doing something wrong?

This game I have Very Advanced Setup mod going. Last game, I had no mods running when it happened anyway.

This game I'm playing:

Large

Continents

Immortal

10 civs

No city states.

Playing wide with Liberty filled up and two clicks into Aesthetics.

In case any of that matters since it happens no matter what my setting are.

Are there setting I can change, or a mod to stop it from happening?

I like the weekly What Are You Reading thread, but

does anyone else think it might be a bit better if people commenting also gave maybe a one line description of what their book is about?

I'm not trying to tell others how to post, just saying that the thread could be an excellent resource for finding new books if we got a bit more than if you do or don't like it.

EDIT:

Sorry for causing some confusion..

This week's What Are You Reading thread is over here
