Well, maybe i messed everything up.

I’m currently pregnant and received a new job offer while pregnant. My husband is laid off, so I needed to move to a role with better pay and benefits.

Due to visa and documentation timelines, my start date is set for early May, when I’ll be ~36 weeks pregnant (C-section expected at 39 weeks).

I informed the hiring manager during start date discussions. He mentioned it may make more sense to move my start date to after maternity leave instead of onboarding for a couple of weeks and then going on leave.

I prefer to start as planned, complete onboarding, and then transition to leave. I’ve shared this with him and he’s discussing internally, but I haven’t heard back yet and we’re about a week away from the start date.

I’m also on a visa and want to avoid any employment gap, and I had turned down another offer for this role.

Has anyone navigated something similar? Did your company allow you to start and then go on leave shortly after, or push your start date? How did you handle it?
