Is Blue Coral the way to go?

I currently have Filter King MERV 8 filters in the 2 14×20×1 returns and when the air handler kicks on and off the filters make a cracking noise. My guess is it's the cardboard holding the filter. I did have Filtrete MERV 11 filters installed for years before finding out I should have MERV 8 filters installed. These MERV 8 filters are much louder though, as the cardboard doesn't feel as sturdy.

So what's the answer? Can I buy a 14×20×1 frame to put the filters into to keep the cardboard from bending or, god forbid, getting sucked into the air handler? Or is there an air filter brand that has sturdier construction?
