9 year old son just diagnosed
Hello all, as the title says, my 9 year old son was just diagnosed as T1D. It’s been a rollercoaster of emotions the past 2 days, as we have been bombarded with information. Our son was experiencing headaches and nausea for the past few days. He had an off color, almost looking grey, and seemed tired. he was also drinking lots of water and he almost had 2 accidents in his sleep, which was not normal. I also noticed he was losing weight. I remember at the beginning of June he weighed 95 lbs and yesterday he weighed 85lbs. We took him to his pediatrician and she wasn’t concerned, said she thought it was constipation. I knew something was off, and begged for blood work. She called me back an hour later and told me to go drive my son 2 hours away to the children’s hospital because his A1C was 10 and his fasting glucose was 224. When we got to the hospital his glucose was 650 and he was almost in DKA. They took us back right away and we’ve been admitted since. My son has level 1 Autism so he does struggle to understand what is actually going on. My husband and I are doing our best to explain everything to him, but I know he still doesn’t really understand what’s happening. He thought once we left he would be able to no longer have shots, but I told him this would be forever & he had a breakdown. He’s ok now, dad and I are learning, but it’s a lot. His blood sugar has been all over the place, up, down, all around. I’m just overwhelmed with what is to come, what to expect. I don’t want to mess up and make him sick with a wrong dose. I’m scared to make a mistake. My son also spends a lot of time with family members and I don’t know if I’ll ever be able to trust him being out of my sight or in anyone else’s care. I’m really just going through it right now, just trying to find any advice, tips, tricks. Anything to help us get through this initial diagnosis time. I’m an extreme over thinker, so I’m trying my best to stay calm and strong for my son.
