Jazz history tours/locations

I am planning to visit with my son December 29-Jan 1. He just started playing saxophone and the main reason we want to go is to learn more about the history of jazz and visit historical musical sites. Are there specific tours or places we should check out? (I see the live music recommendations in the FAQ’s, we will check those out too!)
