Tribalism in the AI discourse

I often see anti-ai and pro-ai folks refer to each other as adversaries and nothing else. I also see a lot of posts that attack the character of people that are pro/anti ai as if the character defines the discourse itself. It seems that counter arguments are taken as opportunities to express why the poster hates their opposition moreso than a discussion of ai's impacts, both helpful and destructive.

Why do people need others to represent their values first in order to show dignity? I am beginning to see that this discourse has more to do with people despising each other and less to do with the topic itself. And if I'm wrong, good - I would like to be proven otherwise.
