confidence in games

hello - wondering what's the best way to help my son improve in soccer, age 8. he says he really enjoys the sport and does well at practice. games have been hit or miss...it looked like he was on his way up with improving in games, putting in lots of effort in the game. But then the last 3 games, he totally looked unfocused or even shy to put in any effort. he's not that type of kid that has a lot of natural confidence while others on his team already had that coming on to the team. the club is offering kids extra practice day (3rd day) and extra game a week for those who want it next year. do you think doing more games and practices will help? we tried a few 1:1 sessions and he does great and seems to enjoy it, but it hasn't really translated into game.
