Inner Game of Tennis - What Game Are You Playing?
For those who've read Inner Game of Tennis: what game are you actually playing?
Gallwey's deepest insight to me isn't the Self 1/Self 2 framework. It's the question of what game you're really playing beneath the surface.
I'll go first. I play at a club with a clear hierarchy. My real game is being seen playing well by the top players so I get invited into their matches. Every error carries extra weight because it's not just a lost point. It's evidence against a narrative I'm trying to build. I know my level is there. I've played with these guys one or two times and held my own. But that underlying game still hijacks my mechanics under pressure.
Once I named it clearly it was almost embarrassing how obvious it was.
What's your game?
