Tennis Wall or ball machine?

Hi there!

I play tennis with a trainer and some friends since 2024 and I see a lot of results.

I manage to play 2 to 3 times a week but not every week. So when I can’t find a hitting partner I use the tennis wall at my club.

However I was looking at some Reddit posts about ball machines and the opinions always point to the fact that they are not worth the price and that a wall or a trainer are better.

Shall I stick to the tennis wall? Can this improve my shots?

Is it possible for me to play in an ITF junior tournament?

I really want to play in an ITF junior tournament and just see what it’s like. I’m asking you guys to see if there is any hope or if it’s too late.

I just turned 16 and my current wtn is a 34. Ive been playing level 6 & 7 tournaments in the US for a while with increasing success. I’m currently out of the country and am playing 4-5 times a week for 1-2 hours. When I am back in the US I will be taking group lessons 2 times a week, a private lesson once a week, match play once a week, and just hitting outside occasionally. In addition to this I will continue playing tournaments in my area 1-2 times a month.

my goal is just to play one match in ITF junior qualifying before I’m too old just to see what it’s like. if I would play in a ITF junior tournament it would probably be in north America any time of the year or in Europe during the summer.

So the few questions I have are as follows:

What WTN will I need to get into qualifying? At what age am I no longer eligible to play ITF juniors? How much harder is it going to be for me to get into a J30 v.s. J60 v.s. J100? How should I improve my tennis schedule to give myself the best shot? What should I work on to be able to make it to this level? And finally, Is there any chance I could manage to make it into the qualifying draw of an ITF Junior tournament?

also any other advice is appreciates!

Forehand Advice

Here are a few points from an official match. We were playing a super tie break which may explain the lack of movement, and it was also extremely hot. I’d really appreciate any feedback or advice on my forehand both the technique and anything else you notice. I only started playing tennis last November so I’m still very much learning and looking to improve.

If i wear running shoes or chuck taylors is it basically a guaranteed rolled ankle?

My wife and I are basically broke, wr were gifted 2 tennis rackets. I like the idea of tennis cause its basically free to play and its a nice couples activity that we can use as our cardio.

I dont wanna but tennis shoes just yet, we will need to wait atleast 2-4 months before because we have other obligations that we are throwing every extra dollar at.

In the meantime i still want to play. Is it better to wear a high top “70s basketball shoe” (chuck taylor) since it kind goes around the ankle sorta… OR should i wear my running shoes (which are higher off fhe ground cause of the foam and seem to be more designed for running?)

My gut says go with the chuck taylor because i know (despite being a FLAT peice of rubber glues to some canvas) basketball players of the 70s (& rocky!) used to survive professional basketball in those shoes. Whereas the runners while modern seem like lateral moves might be unstable (cause theyre higher off ground and plushier aka less positive ground contact in the sole)

That said, never played tennis before in my life. So would love some input on my hypothesis

Forehand advice please =]

Hi all, maybe this is a mental issue, but my forehand always feels a bit worse than my backhand - mainly the take back to racket drop area. My footwork also looks slow to me but I'm not sure. If anyone has tips or notices anything that should be changed then feedback would be appreciated! Also, for my take back I'm unsure of where my left hand should/can be (I see lots of people have it on the throat) and how long it should stay on the racket.

Above all, should I even be worrying about this or is it fine to focus on something else?

Thanks, and sorry for blurry video.

Racket recommendation for a beginner

Hi everyone!

I posted here recently and I’m looking to buy a secondhand racket that I can grow into and use for the long run. I’ve been hunting around local online marketplaces, and I’ve narrowed it down to these choices (all graphite frames, mostly Grip 2).

Which of these options is the absolute best "bang for your buck," and which is the best overall racket for my transition phase?

Here are the choices from my local market:

  1. Artengo TR500 – $40 USD (Seller says used for 1 hr, includes bag & balls)

  2. Dunlop FX 500 (I think it is a demo racket?)– $98 USD (100 sq in, 300g, 16x19)

  3. Babolat Pure Drive (2021) – $105 to $110 USD (100 sq in, 300g, 16x19)

  4. Head Instinct MP Graphene 360 – $122 USD (100 sq in, 300g, 16x19)

  5. Head Radical MP – $90 USD (98 sq in, 295g unstrung, tight 18x20 pattern)

  6. Head T.Carbon One 1000 – ~$57 USD (98 sq in, 305g, older model)

(A bit about my situation)

- I want a racket that doesn't hold me back as my swing speed and technique improve.

- Budget-wise, the Artengo is obviously tempting, but I don't mind spending around $100 USD if a flagship frame like the Pure Drive or Dunlop FX 500 is vastly superior and will last me the next 5+ years.

- I've heard some control frames (like the Radical MP with an 18x20 pattern) might be too punishing for my level right now. Is that true?

Would love to hear your thoughts on the pricing of these options and which route you would take if you were in my shoes. Thanks in advance!

How to manage different ball conditions for intermediate player?

My daughter just played a tournament this weekend and she's around UTR 5 and played girls at around her level. She has more of a power style where she relies on pace to grind down her opponents

I noticed she struggled a lot more in the morning games vs afternoon games and I suspect the pace was just lower because the temperature in the morning was in the 50s vs 80+ in the afternoon making the balls less bouncy off the strings.

Do other people have an issue where they have to "recalibrate" depending on how cold the tennis balls are? Is there any specific advice other than just tell her to hit it harder when it is cold?

Please suggest improvement / drill for serve

Hi, I feel like I am leaking power, for how much movement there is, the ball should be moving faster. What should I change, what drill should I be doing to get more out of my serve ? Thanks a bunch!

Summoning all

Alright, ima need some help in the serve department. My throw feels very inconsistent, i doesn’t even look like im using my legs, not sure at all if i should be throwing higher, im 6’2 so everyone keeps saying throw higher and jump more but its so strange. Im kinda lost. I hit one serve that feels decent, then the next 5 are bad, kinda lost on how to improve and gain consistency. Anything helps.

How to convince my body to swing with racket head speed?

As title states: I’m really struggling with getting consistent racket head speed during my serve. Some days it’s incredible, brings my whole game up. Some days it’s like I’m swinging through molasses and can’t convince myself to swing any faster. Sometimes it switches halfway through a game for no rhyme or reason.

A bit of background: I’ve been playing about 2
years, local club rated me at a 3.0 for whatever that's worth. Year one was group lessons once a week. I met lots of great people to play with and year 2 has been 2privates a month and playing 4-5times a week (half/half doubles and singles, mainly playing with players better then me, but I can take a game or two). About 1 year ago I began really working to improve my serve. I’ve got the
continental grip, switched to pinpoint about 6months ago when my toss got more consistent, load the legs, jump up to the ball, all that good stuff. It still needs work, but I can feel all other areas improving consistently, but racket head speed is just all over the place regardless of how fresh, tired, motivated, relaxed I am.

Any physical or mental recommendations to getting more consistent with that racket head speed? More shadow swings? Shadow swings with a heavy racket? Visualization/meditation?
I’ve read the inner game of tennis and it seems even when self 1 is not involved, self 2 is pretty content to swing lazy lol

When do people re-string their racquets

Hi all, I've been getting into tennis more in the past year. Mostly just rallying and not any matches/tournaments. I've been playing 2-4 times a week on sunny seasons and 1 time a week during the winters. I've only re-strung my racquets when the strings broke. When do people decide to re-string their racquets?

I'm 5ft7 male quite slim, what players could I watch and learn from?

Ideally quite defensive/counter puncher style. I know I'm not going to out power taller and stronger people, so I want to use my smaller frame to my advantage.

Would love to watch some pros who are of similar build play to get some pointers etc.

Hammer VS Pistol

Been experimenting with different grips for serve (continental) and forehand (semiwestern) using a hammer (marked 1) and pistol (marked 2) grips. The pictures only show continental.

Found that I was much more consistent on forehand with the hammer grip and was able to generate a lot of topspin and depth using this grip.

On serve, hammer felt strange at first as I really had to trust the motion and loosen my arm as my wrist was restricted hence I couldn’t really muscle into the ball when tight (which I shouldn’t be doing anyway) but after a while there was much more consistency with the serve and the serve was a much heavier topspin heavy ball.

My question is are these viable grips and do others use these with success? Any advice and information/suggestion/criticism is welcome.
