I think this is a rite of passage, but... How do I win against a "pusher"?
I (28M) have this playing partner that is quite older (45+M) than me, but much more experienced ofc. Both of us have been away from tennis for a while and since coming back I've played more often so I'd say I have the upperhand in fitness and explosive power while he has everything else (brains and technique/control).
Our matches go a little something like this: baseline exchanges where I'm dictating rhythm with a more consistent and deeper shot, but he stills manages to get everything back into play with mostly moonballs or sometimes a weak shot so this goes back and forth until I make a mistake or he manages to force a slice out of me... and when he does, he relentlessly rushes to the net and gets control of the situation, and usually ends the point.
The points I manage to win are usually when I force him to stay at the baseline because he misses there more often than me or when he gives me an easy ball that I can't help but rush to the net and finish.
Enough context I think yall got the picture. What I do know is that if I was able to be more patient and stick to the baseline I'd win more. Also, if am able to make take advantage of him staying deep and advance to the net more I'd win more, but my volley game is very weak and he has a hell of a defensive lob that demoralizes me more often than not when I go up the net.
I'd appreciate tips on how to approach the situation better, I have some ideas, but I can't seem to execute it properly and adjust during the match, I just lost badly and I want all the help I can get to improve :)
I'd much rather play baseline all game, but I don't have the raw power/control to overwhelm him from there and I know it's not being effective against his style of play
