People in this community are way too quick to write off a character as boring

This is something I've been ruminating on for a while.

Historically because Overwatch has had no real story to speak of, it means that when a character is introduced into the game it was expected that what you saw was what you got. It means that if a character didn't come out the gate with a huge personality or an outrageously tragic backstory, it meant that they didn't make a splash with the community because the character was basically trapped in amber from that point forward. Characters lived and died based on having immediate surface level intrigue.

Flash forward to now where there actually is an actually plotted story with legitimate character arcs and development for these characters in mind, it means that characters now have a lot more room to breathe. Mizuki is a perfect example. When he came out in February I saw so many people write him off as boring and uninteresting and literally not even a few months later Shion was introduced and it gave the character an entirely new dimension that absolutely no one had considered possible. Literally one story entry later and the character has maybe one of the most fascinating dynamics in the game. You can say the same thing about Freja, a character people were absolutely VICIOUS about when she first came out.

And don't get me wrong, I get it. We only just got a legitimate overarcing narrative for this game starting this year, so I understand the impulse, but I do hope this gets people to start being a little more open minded about the rest of the cast and new characters moving forward.

Edit: Quite a few people in the comments think I'm talking about the characters in terms of visual design and not in terms of their story and character. Really not sure why, but that's not what I'm getting at.

So is Vendetta actually good again post-buffs?

I'm sure I'm not alone in feeling like this, but Vendetta has been fucking awful since they nuked her from orbit a couple patches back and it seems like the most recent round of buffs she actually feels like you can get results again. Granted I'm still in the metal ranks so take my experience with a grain of salt, but what's the general consensus for her now after the big passive buff?

You can finally see Kiriko on her bike in Neon Junction

The bike is hidden behind another motorcycle on the end of the big gundam statue.

Shion and Mizuki's abusive and co-dependent mother/son relationship is surprisingly dark and nuanced for Overwatch

Art by Shengshinrise on Twitter

Just wanted to shout out the character writing for these two because it's maybe some of the darkest narrative work we've gotten in Overwatch with Sigma. Shion being an abusive monster to Mizuki, but still genuinely feeling saddened and distraught by his betrayal while he cannot even bear the thought of actually standing up to her is some pretty grim stuff. Really well written! Love to see this kind of stuff in Overwatch.
