Three Weeks Out…

Hi,

As above;my surgery took place on 20/07/2026 with me spending a 2 days in ICU and then 8
days on a dedicated ‘Stoma’ ward.

Since being discharged I’ve done reasonably well although part of my wound was slightly open which was eventually sorted after daily visits from the district nursing team.

I also have excellent support from the community stoma nursing team -who’ve been brilliant!

My input/output is fairly equal-I keep a diary-and the stoma itself looks fairly well healed-although there is some blood visible when I change bags.

My main concern is my appetite-I have absolutely none -and I’m wondering if others have been similarly affected by this, for how long, and when their appetite returned to something approaching normality?

I really used to enjoy my food too, which makes this all the more frustrating and annoying!

Any advice would be greatly appreciated .

Thanks.

ARC XL Door.

Has anyone bought and used one of the several types of aftermarket doors out there that fit an ARC XL .
I can’t believe that Gozney don’t market one themselves.
They’ve missed a trick and I reckon they’d sell for £100 plus in UK!

Done and done!

Well, here I lie in my hospital bed having had the Ostomy surgery yesterday.
The surgeon was unable to use a laparoscopic technique ,as we had previously discussed, due to the lack of space because of old adhesions, so went down the midline.
The wound is huge -about 9 inches from top to bottom ,perfectly dry, as it’s uncovered ,and has been closed with a large number of staples.
I also have large bruises surrounding the wound although I get bruises so easily as I have to take warfarin .
Lastly and he has had to create an irreversible stoma, per our pre-surgery discussion .
The procedure took almost six hours to complete but the surgeon sees it as a success and is pleased with his results-so far-but it hurts like the proverbial bastard despite the 3 types of intravenous pain medication I’ve been having since yesterday !
I have eaten three small bowls of soup and a yoghurt today but I’m absolutely (so) not hungry!

Here we go….

Good evening from a frightfully hot UK!
Re the above:
I’ve now collected my ‘Plenvu’ bowel prep and Neomycin / Metranidazol combination before admission and surgery on Monday 20th.
I’m also being marked-up by the stoma nurse when I see her tomorrow morning .
Gulp!

A Date….

Well I now have a date for my sigmoid colon resection surgery of 20th July after the surgical secretary rang me earlier.
This has now focused things a tad!
I’m extremely apprehensive, but hopeful that it will sort my chronic diverticulitis out once and for all.
Irony of irony’s my stomach has been pretty well settled recently-apart from feeling nauseous in the morning.
I will keep you posted as to my progress.

‘G-Day’

The oven and all the kit arrived yesterday!
I’m going to make some dough later, assemble the above, and fire it up on Sunday after the dough has had time to ferment a little.
I will report back later!

A Date….

Hi everyone.
Re the above:
I had a call from my pre-op nurse yesterday and was advised that the surgery is set for 14/07/2026 -at least they’re “working towards” the 14th; although there are a few things that need to knit together before I get the surgery ,ie my stopping my warfarin for self-injected Clexane and the dreaded ‘bowel prep’ which needs to take place the day before the surgery.
My surgeon also told me that a high-dependency bed had to be “absolutely guaranteed for at least three days” so there’s a hurdle or two to jump beforehand!
I will keep you posted as soon as I hear more.

Easy To Fit?…..

Good morning.

After giving Gaggimate the details of my machine -made in 2012- I was advised to get a Gaggimate Pro conversion kit.
I believe that you can send your machine off to have this kit installed professionally but would like to install it myself over a few hours.
I know that there are loads of videos out there, which I will obviously refer to, but are these kits relatively straightforward to fit , and do you need any specialised tools apart from the norm?

Et Voila…

Cross-section of my Moussaka made at the weekend after several requests!
And it tastes as good as it looks and is absolutely delicious.
For anyone wanting the recipe ‘Google Rick Stein Moussaka’
Try as I might I can’t attach the link!

Moussaka-Ready to go!

Just out of the oven, it will have to cool down a tad though before we eat it!

Moussaka,to be continued…..

A moussaka ,which I made yesterday and is currently sat in the fridge ready to go into the oven later.
I will also make a Greek salad to serve with it.
The filling is made with minced lamb, tomato, cinnamon ,bay and oregano.
The vegetables are layered potatoes courgettes and aubergine which have all been fairly hard-fried until golden.
The (infused) béchamel is made with Pecorino which replaces Kefalotiri cheese because I have none, the rest is sprinkled over the top !
I will splash a little olive oil on it before it goes in the oven.

Another update…

Good afternoon from an extremely warm and sunny UK!
I’ve now had my abdominal ultrasound scan although they struggled to find a heart-that’s perfectly normal-and I’ve just seen the anaesthetist this morning who checked me out and explained the inherent risk in the surgery.
I’m unaware of any other outstanding appointments prior to my surgery, although will have to shift over to LMW Heparin at some point and collect (the dreaded) bowel prep. The anaesthetist was leafing through my (copious) notes and did say that my surgeon was definitely going to try to give me an anastomosis ,although I’m not holding my breath for that!
I will keep you posted.
Thanks.

Hi.

I’ve posted a couple of things on here about my forthcoming surgery ,but wanted to ask if anyone else in with my condition (complicated diverticulitis) has had periods of feeling as if they want to throw up?

I’ve felt really queasy for a good few days and am wondering whether a chat with my GP is in order?

I just don’t like bothering people unnecessarily!
