Women in tech: is application management a good long-term career?
Hi everyone,
I’ve recently started finding the role of application manager really interesting, and I’m thinking about possibly studying for it through an online program next to my current job.
I’m currently in my mid-30s and working in logistics without a degree. I do have a permanent contract at my current job, so changing careers feels like a big step.
At the same time, I’m wondering how future-proof this career is. Do you think application manager roles could easily be taken over by AI in the future? Honestly, it feels like many logistics jobs could also be replaced or heavily changed by AI, but somehow logistics still feels “safer” to me than an IT job.
I understand some of the tasks of an application manager, but I’m wondering if the role is easier for AI to take over just like programming, or if it’s actually very different in practice.
I’m also curious if there are many women aged 50+ working as application managers. Is it a field where you can realistically build a long-term career?
When I look up videos online, I do see some older women working as application managers or in similar IT support/business roles, but I honestly can’t remember seeing many older women working as programmers. Maybe that’s just my perception, and I could be completely wrong, but sometimes it feels like women stay longer in non-technical roles as they get older.
I also wonder if women in tech sometimes get tired of working behind a computer all day as they get older. Application management sounds interesting to me, but at the same time I do like that in my current logistics job I’m not sitting behind a computer constantly.
I’d really love to hear your thoughts or experiences, especially from women already working in tech.
