Is the Pikachu VMAX #188 from Vivid Voltage worth buying right now?

Is the Pikachu VMAX #188 from Vivid Voltage worth buying right now?

Pikachu #188 is still way below its ATH price but bottomed a little over two years ago in April 2024, after spending its first 3+ years steadily going down. It’s a top chase in Vivid Voltage.

Any opinions on whether this card is a buy right now or whether we should stay away?

This card from Destined Rivals should be way more than 78 cents

TCGplayer has the market price at $0.78.

Pokémon has some amazing Ho-Oh cards, so I’m not saying this is the best one ever. But compared to other Ho-Oh cards, this one being under $1 makes zero sense to me.

The picture doesn’t even do it justice. In person, it almost looks 3D.

I feel like this card should at least be in the $4 to $5 range.

Why is this card so cheap?

Pikachu VMAX 123/S-P. It's a promo card from Japan from the PikaPika! Pikachu! Campaign.

TCGplayer.com has zero listings for it. eBay has just two PSA 10s and two raw ones listed in the United States.

Anyone in the United States ever seen this at a show or an LCS?

No, this isn’t a $2 card that went to $4. Pikachu 131/091 from Paldean Fates was a $37 card just two months. Market price is now $79.95, up 116% in two months.

It is now the 4^(th) highest priced card in Paldean Fates by raw market price and just yesterday slid into the #2 spot for highest-priced card based on PSA 10 prices. Yesterday, three PSA 10s sold on eBay for $850, $949.99, and $949.99 before tax.

What does everyone think? Would you pay $80 for that Pikachu? Or $950 for the PSA 10?

An Arizona collector filed a class action lawsuit against PSA’s parent company, claiming that its acquisitions of SGC and Beckett created a monopoly in the grading market.

PSA already controlled roughly 70 percent of the market, and after those acquisitions it is estimated to be closer to 80 percent.

The lawsuit argues that competition has dropped, while prices have increased and service quality has declined.

From an investing perspective, I am curious how people are thinking about this.

Does PSA’s dominance strengthen the long term value of PSA slabs, or does it introduce risk if there is regulatory action or forced changes later on? And with SGC and Beckett no longer independent, does CGC become the only real alternative?

Are you sticking with PSA, or starting to diversify your grading strategy?

I'm looking for raw cards that I can send in for grading that meet three criteria.

  1. The PSA 10 price is at least 3x the raw market price and preferably 5x or more for lower priced cards.

  2. The raw price + grading fees is less than the PSA 9 price. This way if the card doesn't come back a 10, I wouldn't lose money sending it in for grading.

  3. The raw price is under $300 and preferably under $200.

An example is Seismitoad #105 from Black Bolt. Also, Roaring Moon ex #162 from Prismatic and Charizard ex #234 from Paldean Fates, though the Charizard barely meets the criteria.

Any others?
