Crash cymbals

Can you guys recommend some good 16” crashes? Right now I’m using a B8 pro medium crash with a couple pieces of tape. It sounds good but I want something a bit darker and heavier. The brand doesn’t matter to me. I’m also considering hammering it.

What kit is Buddy playing here?

Looks a bit like the Sonor Martini kit, although it predates it by quite a few decades.

When were clear heads invented?

I’m curious as to when they were invented. Every time I look into this topic, the earliest date I can find is sometime in the eighties, yet these pictures seem to say otherwise. Also, why is it that when I click on a Drummerworld article link from Google I get taken to the homepage? I can’t even search for the article on the website.

Is there footage of Ringo swinging on the ride?

A few weeks ago I was watching Cozy Cole and some other jazz drummers whose names I can’t remember. As I watching them I was reminded of how Ringo would swing on the hi-hats but I can’t recall him ever doing so on the ride. I also can’t find any clips of him doing so.

Also, you guys should really check out Cozy Cole you can hear how influenced Ringo was by him.

14” bass drums are seriously underrated

Inspired by Colin Kocher, I decided to de-tune my floor tom and use it as a bass drum. The sounds I got out of that thing were amazing. I now see why people prefer smaller bass drums. Once I get another floor tom, I’ll probably make this one my bass drum.

Anybody here with a 22” bass drum?

I like my bass drum but it’s very boomy. I’ve used a sock over my beater, EQ patch, felt strip and while it does sound a bit better, it feels wrong to muffle it. What do you guys do if you use a 22” or 20” bass drum? Do you muffle or get over it?

Why are Guitar Center kits tuned so weird?

One kit I played had the snare batter head choked and the reso head had a medium-high tuning. The toms and bass drum were quite loose and hardly had any rebound. The other kit had the had the snare batter head even more choked and with an e-ring. The toms were a tad bit higher but the bass drum had absolutely zero rebound with foam inside. It also had Emad heads. The cymbal was almost on the floor and the hi-hat was eye level. They’ve been doing this for months. Is this a local issue or do you guys experience this as well?

Since learning about Michael’s influences and how he listened to music across many different genres, I’ve begun to do the same. I’ve come to appreciate many different sounds and have incorporated them into my playing. How have you responded to learning about his influences?

Most people play the melody with singles, but it’s actually a bit more complicated. The pattern is: RLRLRRLLRLRRLRLL. The rest of the song is mainly rudiments and this pattern: RLLRRRLR or RLRLRLLR. I’m just making this post to help people.

I’ve got a brass crash cymbal that I don’t use. It’s incredibly thin, splashy and trashy. Should I use it as a splash or just buy a normal splash?
