Another romance book haul because I have no self-control (I found Minx by Julia Quinn!!!) + a free little library haul and library discards haul

I took a day trip up to Chicago yesterday, and decided to go to a Half-Price Books on my way home. This is probably the best Half-Price Books I’ve ever been to (granted, I’ve only been to 3 or 4 locations since they’re not close to me loll)!!! Almost all of this haul was between $1-3 dollars on the clearance rack. I also found an incredible mint condition of {Minx by Julia Quinn} with the gorgeous clinch cover!?? I’ve been searching for this forever, and I was so happy to find it! I’ve also been looking for a copy of {When a Scot Ties the Knot by Tessa Dare} forever because i desperately want to give it a reread!!

I did also label the free little library haul. I was dropping off some DNF’ed books on Thursday and came across some amazing books! I didn’t have enough books to trade the “equal amount” so I will be going back tomorrow and putting some more stuff in that free little library. I unfortunately work today, but I made a promise to myself to do it tomorrow.

And then I have the library discard haul. My library does have annual book sales, but also gives away many discard books for free during the year. I found these on the discard cart and snagged them up!

A lot of you guys always ask where I find all my mass market romances+vintage romances. I think a lot of it is luck for one. I live in a pretty small retirement community, with lots of old ladies. I have thrift stores around me, and some used book stores that are a relatively decent drive to. My community has many free little libraries too.

Overall, fantastic haul, but I need to stop buying books! One of these days I’ll do a bookshelf “tour” and show you all the books I own (which I think it’s over 1,000 at this point…)

Calling the bot for all the books found:

{Highland Conquest by Heather McCollum} - $1

{Someone to Love by Mary Balogh} - $1

{Falling Bed With a Duke by Lorraine Heath} - $3.50

{When the Duke Was Mine by Lorraine Heath} - $3.50

{Lord of Ice by Gaelen Foley} - $1

{Lady Derring Takes a Lover by Julie Anne Long} - $1

When a Scot Ties the Knot by Tessa Dare - $3.50

{Mr Impossible by Loretta Chase} - $3.50

{Beyond the Highland Mist by Karen Marie Moning} - $1 (read this a longgg time ago and wanted to reread)

{Be My Baby by Susan Andersen} - $1

Minx by Julia Quinn - $4

{One Perfect Rose by Mary Jo Putney} - $1

{The Duke’s Disaster by Grace Burrowes} - $1

{Hawk’s Woman by Madeline Baker} (nervous to read this one, I’m always very cautious with Native American historicals…)

{The Hellion Bride by Catherine Coulter}

{The Maiden by Jude Deveraux}

{The Forever Rose by Robin Lee Hatcher}

{The Devil Beyond Moura by Virginia Coffman}

{Lady be Bad by Candice Hern}

{To Desire a Wicked Duke by Nicole Jordan}

“Evil” stepmom x her stepdaughter who hates her! Needs tension, good smut but no erotica, + an age gap. Something maybe similar to book!Rhaenyra/Alicent from House of the Dragon

I know this is an absolutely insane request, like please do side eye me. But, I’ve been reading so many good book accurate ASOIAF fanfics about Rhaenyra/Alicent recently that I need to read this in a published book ASAP. If you aren’t familiar with these two, they have a lot of beef and lowkey tension in book!verse. Rhaenyra’s mother dies and her father Viserys, the king, remarried Alicent Hightower. Alicent was ok with Rhaenyra at first, until Viserys names Rhaenyra his heir to the throne. Alicent is pissed because she believed her first son would be heir to the throne (due to him being a male).

So I’m basically looking for an “evil” stepmother x her stepdaughter book. FMC 1 marries the FMC 2’s father. I don’t really care if the marriage is genuine or whatever. FMC 1 doesn’t like her new stepdaughter, or at least is outwardly mean to her. FMC 2 hates her new stepmother and thinks she’s using her father (or something akin to that).

It doesn’t even have to be that exact scenario, and the stepmother FMC doesn’t have to actually be evil. I’m just wanting that tension dynamic of them disliking each other but also being so attracted to each other. Also I need open door spice! I’m NOT looking for erotica books. I do want a plot. Also wanting an age gap if possible.

Any KU P&P variations with some steam?

I feel like this fandom has so little explicit fanfics, and the ones that are explicit are mostly erotica (which I’m NOT looking for). I’m looking for a P&P variation on KU between Darcy and Elizabeth with open door sex scenes. But also, I want the book to have a plot. I don’t want erotic romance or erotica. I also love high angst plot lines, so that’s a bonusB Plot can be whatever, but those three things are my requirements. Thank you all!

I found Indigo by Beverly Jenkins at my local thrift for 25 cents???!!! + the rest of the amazing haul I acquired today ft. Max the Cat

Omg I’m still in shock that this happened. I went back to my favorite thrift store in town after having not gone for months. This thrift store is absolutely amazing, and donates all their proceeds to the local DV shelter. Whenever I go I always find amazing books, always romance. Everytime i go in here, my honest thought is, “We lost a baddie” LOL. Because realistically, what old ladies who love romance novels are getting rid of their entire collections unless they died?? Very very few, I imagine.

Anyways, they always have things priced reasonably, and have all their paperback books priced at 25 cents. Today I decided it was finally time to go back. I grabbed my cart, started scanning the shelves and immediately {Indigo by Beverly Jenkins} popped out at me. I gasped, scared someone behind me, and snatched the book off the shelf. And there it was in all its wonderful glory, for only 25 cents. I kind of burst into tears (not even kidding, like I was actually crying…). I love this book so much and it’s one I’ve wanted to own forever. It’s so expensive online, so I’ve never bitten the bullet and bought it. But wow, I found it. And for 25 cents. I will cherish this book forever, I’m still in absolute shock.

I also found some amazing other books, and even an ARC of {Wild Oats by Pamela Morsi}??? That one also had me gasping in shock. {Garters by Pamela Morsi} is one of my favorite books, and I’ve enjoyed her other books a lot. So to see an ARC of not only a book that old, but from a fave author of mine?? Absolutely insanity. I did a side by side comparison, just to show you all what the published book vs the ARC copy looked like. I tried to Google and find other people’s ARC copies, but alas, no success. If anyone else has any ARCS of Morsi’s books, please show them in the comments!!

They also had TONS of Margaret Moore’s backlist. I picked up one, and I’ve heard of her in passing, but never really added any of her books to my TBR. If anyone of you recommend her, please let me know and I’ll go back and stock up on her stuff!

I used to go to this thrift store like once every other week, and I need to start doing it again. I’m kicking myself because I probably missed out on some absolute gems on the months I didn’t go!!! Anyways, I will list below the other books I found for the bot, but omg…this was an insanely successful trip.

*Removed all the non historicals from the tags*

{All I Desire by Rosemary Rogers}

{Kiss Me Quick by Margaret Moore}

{Desperado by Rebecca Brandewyne}

{Kiss Me at Christmas by Valerie Bowman}

{Forever in Your Embrace by Kathleen E Woodwiss}

{Across a Starlit Sea by Rebecca Brandewyne}

{Some Like it Scandalous by Maya Rodale}

Soft dom MC’s

Maybe too horny of a request loll?? I’ve been searching for some historical romances with main characters who are softer and maybe even subtle doms. Really sweet and sensual but also softly commanding with their partners in and out of the bedroom.

I think this is wayyy more common in the contemporary genre than the historical genre unfortunately!! But I wanted to see if any of you had some good recs.

I’m honestly open to any time periods or other tropes featured. Im very open to queer romances . I’m not looking for erotica or erotic romance or books predominantly about/surrounding sex.

The only books I can think of that I’ve read with this vibe are almost all Alice Coldbreath books!

Some things I attribute to this trope:

- Lots of pet names like “sweetheart” “angel” “baby” “sweet girl” “love” ect.,

- More gentle and nurturing than hard and mean/could also be a grumpy/mean character who’s only gentle and nurturing with their partner

- Positive reinforcements

In the bedroom:

- Subtle or heavy praise like “You’re doing so good” “There’s my girl/boy” “You look so pretty” ect.,

- Taking the lead on things and guiding the other MC but being sweet about it

- I think a pleasure dom can also fit in the soft dom category too with overstimulation, making sure their partner is overly satisfied. “I can’t take it anymore” “Yes you can, Angel”

She’s the absolute sweetest ever and he’s the exact opposite

I’m so sorry, I love this cliche trope so much. Just something about a sweet, kind lady who has the mean, asshole on his knees for her is my fictional bread and butter. She’s like the cutest, gentlest sunshine and he’s like a rabid, feral dog that only she can touch.

What I’ve read so far with this:

Alice Coldbreath is probably the queen of this trope. It comes up in almost all of hers books.

{Devil in Winter by Lisa Kleypas}

{The Bride by Julie Garwood}

{Marrying Winterborne by Lisa Kleypas}

{Wild by Jill Barnett}

{Cherish by Catherine Anderson}

{The Portrait by Meghan Chance}

{An Earl Like You by Caroline Linden}

{Never Seduce a Scot by Maya Banks}

{Duke in Darkness by Nicola Davidson}

{Untouched by Maya Campbell}

{Guilty Pleasures by Laura Lee Gurhke}

{The Highwayman by Kerrigan Byrne} - pretty much every Kerrigan Byrne tbhhh

{Without Words by Ellen O’Connell}

{The Devil is a Marquess by Elisa Braden}

Probably more but that’s all I can think of at the moment!

The amount of historical romance books that have racism against Romani people is very weird!!

I’ve been an avid historical romance reader for around 5 years now (and I know plenty of people here have been reading historicals since the 70s and 80s), and I’ve encountered this weird subset of racism in these books *a lot*. Specifically involving Romani people, or “g*psy’s” as most books derogatorily call them. A lot of the plots involve th “fortune teller” woman trope with dark skin and Romani stylized clothing. They live in caravans, and travel in nomad groups, and are often seen as a negative character in the story.

Yesterday, I was reading {The Marriage Contract by Ruth Ann Nordin} and became uncomfortable when the story described the white female main character being “cursed” by a “g*psy” in the past. I thought this was going to be a one-off thing, and we were going to leave that behind us, but oh no. No, the entire antagonist in the book is this Romani woman who’s evil and has tons of offensive stereotypes linked to her character. As I was reading, I realized that this type of racism has come up *so much* in other historicals I’ve read. The sad part is that I really enjoyed the book until the awful portrayal of Roma people.

But this also isn’t a one-off occasion. This is probably the 9th or 10th time I’ve encountered stereotypes or racism against a Romani character in a historical romance. I know a lot of these books are older, which is definitely a contributing factor to outdated and racist caricatures and language used. But this book is from 2018. Another one I read that was published around that time had a half-Romani Mae lead, and the author was just blatantly racist against her own character!! {Dark Season by Johanna Lowell}. Even another instance I remember was in an Anne Gracie book (can’t remember which one!!!).

Romani racism isn’t just the only racism in historicals unfortunately. But it’s so apparent and in-your-face everytime. Why does a stereotype fortune-teller g*psy woman have to be in historicals? It often adds nothing to the story. I’m kind of wondering if I’m going crazy or if other people have noticed this type of thing too.
