AITA for trying to befriend a friend of a friend?

A while ago I was playing League of Legends with some friends and we wanted a full team. We were only 4 people and none of our usual friends were available. One of my friends added a friend who also plays league but it part of another friend group he is in. We ended up playing all evening with them and I added them on discord (and steam the next day).

In the morning about 10 minutes after I added them on Steam I get a message from my friend asking why the hell I added them and that it was a weird thing to do. He was very aggressive about it and said I was trying to steal his friends. At this point I hadn’t even said anything to that person in private, only in that call we were all in. I said I didn’t understand and that I don’t think it’s weird at all. He got so angry with me that he called me r*tarded and an IDF soldier. Later I asked him to apologize for what he said and he got angry at me again because he didn’t mean it and that I should learn how to take a joke. He also called me manipulative and said I need therapy for breaking his boundaries like that. I ended up apologizing instead.

What’s confusing about this whole situation is that the other two people who were in that call, are now essentially part of that other friend group as well. I’m the only one he got this mad at. The other two people even agreed that it was a really weird thing to do and to just drop it. Before this, they hadn’t had much contact with that person either.
For context: I know the 3 people I was originally in call with IRL and we (used to) hang out occasionally.

Now I’m wondering, was I really the AH for adding them or was he overreacting? I’m thoroughly confused by all of it.
