Tiny outboard

Hopefully this counts as a small engine given its basically a weedeater converted to an outboard. I purchased a little cruise n carry outboard discovered it was out of gear oil. I pulled the propeller and the cover to the gear assembly so I could give them a look over to make sure things looked okay. When I pulled the propeller assembly, two cylindrical...things...came out and slid into the gear box. Round on one side flat on other. I have no idea what direction they go back in. I would thing round towards gears and round towards propeller and the flat ends butt against eachother? Any helps appreciated.

Cruise N Carry

I bought an old cruise ans carry and noticed it was out of gear oil. So I tool the propeller off and opened up the gear case to make sure things weren't bad. When I did these two bullet shaped pieces slide out of the shaft (I think). They are identical. I assume the round end of one goes towards gears? Not sure what direction other one slides in. I'm not super mechanically inclined but trying to learn, any help is appreciated.
