Moving Abroad with Kids? Here's What Changes Depending on Their Age
How your child experiences a move abroad depends a lot more on their age than most parents expect. Younger children often struggle with changes in routine and unfamiliar surroundings but tend to adapt fairly quickly once a new normal sets in. Older kids and teens usually handle the logistics fine but feel leaving behind their social circle much more acutely- that part tends to take longer to work through.
For planning purposes, the general recommendation is to start 6 to 12 months in advance, especially if you're targeting competitive international schools in your destination city.
It also helps to research local pediatricians before or shortly after the move, so you're not scrambling to find care during an already stressful transition.
A few things that help regardless of age- keeping routines as consistent as possible in the first few weeks (mealtimes, bedtime rituals), packing a "first week abroad" bag with favorite snacks and comfort items, and getting kids involved in local activities early rather than waiting until they're "settled" to start building connections.
