String quartet programming help

My quartet and I are currently thinking of a program to play at a competition earlier next year. The competition is not prestigious but still somewhat competitive. It asks for contrasting selections and a program no longer than 25 minutes. We want to play Webern Langsamer Satz and it’s difficult to come up with a program under 25 minutes that contain the Webern. So far we have thought of this following program: Beethoven String Quartet No.11: Mvt.I, Webern Langsamer Satz, and Prokofiev String Quartet No.1: Mvt.II. However we are looking for different program ideas and combinations. Preferably nothing too difficult… thanks!

Is it weird if I program a long piece of chamber music for a recital?

I hope this is the right place to ask… I plan to have a senior recital this coming spring and the idea of gathering some close friends and play Schoenberg’s Verklarte Nacht occurred to me. I thought it might be convenient and interesting if I had a portion of the recital dedicated to the piece but I was wondering if that is a bit too abnormal? I do realize that it is my senior recital and I could essentially do whatever I’d like but I was wondering what others might think?

Is it worth it to pick up horn?

Hi. I consider myself to be a pretty skilled string player (violist) and I’m pursing a viola performance degree in the next couple of years. I’m always fascinated by brass instruments, especially the horn. Is it worth it for me to pick the instrument up as a hobby? Would it be too difficult to learn as a hobbyist who probably can’t get a proper teacher for the time being?

Is this varnish coming off to my cloth?

I’ve been using a chamois cloth to prevent sweat damage from my neck. My neck would get pretty sweaty occasionally and the chamois would get ever so slightly damp. I thought it was doing its job but I recently put the cloth in front of light and there seems to be brown residue on the instrument side area where the my neck would be. The cloth looks normal without light exposure but under light it looks like there has been varnish coming off. I attached the photos of my cloth. Is this a concerning amount of varnish if it is varnish at all? Could it be the material of the cloth? On a side note I’ve noticed chamois dampens the sound quite a bit so I would appreciate other material suggestions.

Edit: this cloth has been used for a little over a week since its last wash.

Does anyone have the solo viola part of Takemitsu’s A String Around Autumn?

I’m considering if I want to learn this in the future and I have no idea how difficult it is or what the part looks like. I would really appreciate it if anyone has the part.

Should I worry about sweat on rib varnish?

I’ve been playing on a fine new viola for over a month now and I’ve been spending a good amount of hours daily with it in practice sessions/rehearsals. I’m always worried about getting any amount of moisture from my hand on the varnish of my viola and would always wash my hands before I play it - sometimes even more times throughout the practice session to ensure my hand isn’t sweaty anymore. I wouldn’t say my hands get especially sweaty most of the time and it is usually just moisture in my palm that would come in contact with the varnish on the rib especially when I am playing in higher positions. I noticed a lighter area on the circled portion in the image attached and I’m not sure if it’s due to wear. This might be an irrational fear as it is a new and expensive but I was wondering what others think.

Help me settle on auditions sonata

I’m planning to take college auditions this coming fall/spring and I have pretty much settled on my list of schools and audition repertoire. However, I cannot seem to settle on a sonata. I originally thought I would play Clarke and started learning it but then I was told by some people to not play Clarke because schools like Juilliard doesn’t like students playing it for auditions. I’ve been on the fence about Clarke since and don’t know if I should keep it or learn a new sonata since I haven’t worked on it a lot yet. The other pieces I’m playing are the first mov of Walton and Bach Suite 3 Prelude & Sarabande. Does anyone have sonata suggestions that would go with the rest of my program? Does the first movement of the Shostakovich work for college auditions? As much as I would love to play it I’m not sure how it will contrast with Walton and the audition panel might not want to hear a bunch of pizz. I also have to limit it to the first movement because of Colburn.

Can’t figure out what’s stopping the case from closing completely

I recently switched to a bam case and the first thing i noticed is that the case does not close fully especially the lower half. Is there going to be unnecessary stress on the locks if I keep forcing it closed?

Does colleges only want to hear the 1st movement of Marchenbilder?

If I want to play Marchenbilder for my college auditions, would I just play the first movement despite it being under four minutes? I’m not sure but I would think colleges want to hear more for the sonata…
