I am a newbie and wanted to do my first smoke. I have an old offset smoker from a friend and wanted to try it first before buying my first smoker. I have done my research but can’t seem to find the proper way to use meat probe thermometer to check ambient temperature of the smoker.

I got a dual probe thermometer from amazon but it didn’t come with a grate clip. And I believe that the probe shouldn’t touch the grate inside the smoker to check the right temperature. (Or am I wrong with this?) my question is, is there a way to still use the probe thermometer without the grate clip? Thank you in advance for answers and happy memorial weekend y’all!
