Tantrums when sleepy

I’m not sure the best way to word this.. but essentially our almost 4yo only ever has a tantrum/meltdown if she’s tired (before naptime/bedtime.) I don’t think I could name one other instance that she’s thrown a fit. I’m struggling with how to handle these tantrums when I know the root of it is because she’s so tired. Outside of the obvious of not letting her get overtired, what is the best way to handle these situations? Sticking to our boundaries when she’s losing her mind because she’s exhausted which in turn delays her going to sleep seems counterproductive, but I also know it’s important for her to have the consistency and boundaries.
