I made one

Lost two nubbins to poor sprue placement.

Some thoughts after going through the whole process:

- the differing style of nubbin attachment between riveted/soldered/cast in place is simply due to varing skill and available equipment. I'm incredibly impressed that any craftsman was able to cast them as part of the object without vaccum casting machinery. I also speculate that some of the riveted and soldered examples are actually signs of repair or completing semi failed casts.

- I genuienly struggle to believe this process was carried out to create any kind of tool. There are simpler, cheaper and still existing methods to do everything thatI've seen suggested.

- while it's possible it was a game or gambling device I believe the labour involved makes it impractical for this purpose. At least in so far as it being available to the average person and wide spread.

- the 20 nubs are just as if not more important than the 12 faces. The variation in examples I studied has convinced my it wasn't any kind of measuring device although perhaps a form of calander is possible if not a day accurate one for use in daily life.

- overall I lean heavily towards it being a symbolic object related to a known or unkown mystery cult. I continuely go back to thinking about the geometric cult of Pythagaros and believe that it is in some way representative of the known world/universe, life and death or something else in that direction.

- doesn't mean it COULDN'T work as a dick measurer. More study needed.

Struggling with reticulating in a kiln. Temp issue? Lack of oxygen?

Hey all hoping to pick your brains if anyone has reticulation experience.

I've successfully reticulated with a propane torch (last photo) but its expensinve in gas and time consumint so thought I'd try the kiln as suggested in McReighs complete metalsmith.

Three runs at 650 celsius for 20 minutes with air cooling and pickling in between, no result when attempting to reticulate.

Thought it could be the kiln temp reading so jacked it up to 680 and repeated. Same result.

Went to 710 but noticed the surface of one piece showed some deformation so stopped pushing it.

I don't seem to be getting that grey oxidated layer forming, now that I'm writting I wonder if removing the metal from the kiln instead of allowing it to cool inside could cause am issue but I don't think so.

Any thoughts on why this isnt working?
