Why use anothercam?

I have made a few updates, tested on better devices (Oppo x7 ultra), and I've been asking... Why use the app when the default camera is great already?

My main reason is... Super res RAW.

You see, when you take hi res on the default camera app, the result is a bad processed jpg. Don't get me wrong, the hardware is good, so you won't have it terrible like the Reno, but it's a jpg.
If you want both hi res and in RAW, you can't have it...
Here is an example of the current version.
The _x2 dng is the super res.
Not much of a difference, right? Well, almost. Because this is a super res, I can zoom in wild, you can see the last photo how much more.
Is AnotherCam for you? I don't know. I can't really tell. But I want good photos for myself and I want people to have better photos for themselves. If that's a good reason for you, then feel free to join in and make suggestions and report bugs. I'm open to all.
If you already bought it, then feel free to share your shots. I would love to see them. Remember to tag properly thou so we can have a good separation of what's what here.

A new kicktail

So here I am again with this... It has been a long time since I was not very happy with having to print multiple kicktails and using different wheel sizes.
My current version is a way so you can print one base, use it and print just the right size for your wheel. If you are not happy with my size, just adjust to your need... I have uploaded the STEP version for the back part. I was not going to have the top part as a layer, but it helps with printing and allows you to also make it yours, just remember to give a 2.0mm spacing.

This model is 10x the correct size, just keep in mind to reduce to 10%.

I use 3 walls and 80% infill with PETG.

Explaining about number of frames and why not more means better

I think my previous post seemed to justify why the app is for lower end devices, and that was not my intention, so let me explain what is going on in any phone or actual cameras.

4 frames will merge into a single super res image

When i shoot 4 frames, let's say, a tree moving in the wind. The branch is either covering a pixel or it is showing a white cloud from behind, so the frame is either black sometimes, or white sometimes. What color should be the pixel in the SR image?

Considering 100 is white and 0 is black

Considering that 100 is white and 0 is black (to make easier to calculate, but the actual value usually range from 0 - 255 RGB), if we get 4 frames, we sum all the values, 100 + 100 + 0 + 0, and divide by the number of frames, in this case 4. That gives us 50, so, it should be a gray color.

Using 8 frames

Now let's say I use 8 frames now, and end up with 4 frames white and 4 black frames. What should be the SR resulting value?

Same result

So doing the same calculations, 100 + 100 + 100 + 100 + 0 + 0 + 0 + 0, all divided by 8, that is 400/8 = 50. Same 50 that you got from 4 frames. That means, you didn't win anything by taking more frames.

But you might say... "You are using a very default scenario, where you have no real gain, what if the values were different?"

And you would be correct, more frames could lead you to a more correct value... but how many frames would be the best option for that?

Different range of colors

A lot of frames

Imagine that you take a lot of frames... 100 frames... remember that math... 100 + 100 + ...

Imagine doing that for 100 numbers and dividing by 100. That seems ok, right? Well... we are calculating 1 pixel. For a 12 MP that means 12 million pixels. Sounds scary? More or less... but the point is not that.

Sum and divide

Value range

When you take 1 frame (let's consider that 1 pixel in a frame), we will check the value of that pixel and divide by the number of that. So a pixel that can be from 0 til 100, divided by 1, gives us the actual value of the pixel. A pixel 85 will mean 85 in the resulting SR.

Now let's say we took 10 frames. Each frame range from 0 to 100, and it will have it's value divided by 10 in the ending super res. That means if a pixel is 0 divided by 10 = 0, or 100 divided by 10 = 10. Meaning, one single frame now will affect the resulting value +10 at most.

100 frames? 100/100 = 1. So a new frame can only affect +1. So if the resulting super res was around 54, one frame more will increase at most to 55.

1000? That is 0.1... so a new frame can only change from, let's say that 54... to 54.1.

You see... more frames means that at some point, the frame won't be affecting the ending result that much.

But there is more...

Size problem

When we get 1 frame, we usually will end up with a 20MB image. If we get 10 frames, that is 200MB that we need to do math over. That means we need to keep all these images in memory to do the math, we cannot store it in the SD and read it later. (I am lying here... we can... that is why you see some apps doing post processing later on, but that is to avoid locking the shutter while it is saving the images and doing the calculations, and not because they can do the math over each pixel).

When we talk about 100 frames, that means 2000MB, so 2GB of memory... and I dont mean storage here... I mean 2GB of RAM...

Here you might think "Hey... I have 16GB of RAM on my phone... so what is the problem?". The problem is that this app is not the sole app running... you need RAM to run the phone itself... the whole android system, the notification bar, the background messaging, the social media running on the back... So Android cap the amount of memory an app can use... but games can use memory, a lot, right?!

And yes... you are right here... but do you really want your phone overheating while processing all these frames, crashing when you don't have enough ram available, missing saving the image... for 1 value more?

Can I be honest? If it was me... I would take 10 super res with 8 frames and merge them on a different application and see if there was any real difference that justified taking 10 photos. On most of my testing with both the app and a real camera, is that the real gain is almost none, none or worse in most cases, because something else went wrong, like movements or the scene just changed.

I hope this help understanding the overall concept, and again... although this app is meant for low end devices, the above explanation works in all cameras and phones.

Answering some common questions

Hey there people, I have been asked a few times about some features of the app and why not improve it, so I want to dig deeper into a few ones.

Why only 16 frames, and why only 8 (capped) for super res?

Ok, so here is the thing...
Mobile camera output uncompressed RAW frames.
A 48 MP RAW frame (10-bit or 12-bit packed) requires around 72 MB to 96 MB of RAM.
A 12 MP RAW frame requires ~18 MB to 24 MB of RAM.
If you try to hold 20 RAW frames in a ZSL (zero shutter lag, to avoid shakiness)

Memory Overhead = 20 * 24 = 500 MB

Holding that much RAM constantly while the camera is running on a high end device might be ok, but on lower end mobile phones, like my RENO 13F, that means you will start to see some lag. Also consider that you need some processing power for the viewfinder processing, focus peak, LUT etc. Keep in mind that 20 frames would be fine for faster shutter speeds, but when we are talking about longer ones, keep multiple frames will take some time. So we don't want you to keep so long trying to keep steady to hold grab the photo.

More frames means 2 things:

- more memory and processing
- more issues with alignment

That goes to the next question...

What happens if something moves while I am shooting?

There are a few ways to align a frame.

Usually, you will get a frame, check the surronding pixels and calculate a mean. What do I mean by that...

Thing of a pixel. Now imagine it shows white on the first photo, white on the second, black on the third, black on the fourth.
What color should be the pixel? Black or white?
Neither... why? Because the more frames I get, the more "exactness" I can be of that pixel. But why would a pixel chance? Imagine a tree, moving the branches with the wind and the back is a white cloud. You get the cloud first, you get the cloud again, you get the branch then and the branch again. What will be the color then?

Gray.

That's why you see ghosting in your photos, specially with stacking.

How can you fix this? Can you focus on a specific place and align considering that? It is possible... but that means I would need to crop everything around. If a branch goes up and down making an angle, the next photo to be aligned should be rotated. So, although it is possible, it is not viable through the app.

Why do you even stack then?

Here is the interesting part...

For the exactly reasons I mentioned above, if you take one shot, another, another another... and stack them. A pixel that was gray can now fall into a blacker side, rather than a light gray. That means if you stack photos, you will get more sharpness and details... BUT... there is a catch.

More should means better, right?

Well... the thing is... if you shake too much, you will start to cross a line where instead of getting more details, you will start to get... more noise. That will increase blurriness in your photos. Also, getting more images to stack, means I need to load the images into memory and make calculations over it. That means high end devices like an Oppo ultra device will perform and be faster than a pro device. That also means, if I focus on the ultra devices, the lower end devices like my 13F will start crashing, because it just doesn't have enough memory. The price I have set for this app is for the lower end devices. I want that these lower end devices to have better photos. The pros and ultras already has a great output, and while it can be better, you won't be sad that your device isn't outputting well.

All that said, what I mean is... is not that I don't want to bring more to this app. Is just that I can't improve it until a threshold that is either hardware limitation, or even a photography limitation. I am using techniques that you can use also in real cameras, like stacking to improve sharpness and details.

General opinions and suggestions

I welcome everybody to test and suggest new features and improvements, and also report issues that you have. I will try my best to get all the possible features to all of us, but also, keep in mind that the focus here are the little guys... the ones that won't be able to affoard an ultra device, but wants to get the most of their current phones.

I will try to bring a night mode and some other features in the future. I will keep you all informed, and thank you for using and providing suggestions and opinions!

Shooting landscape

I don't own an ultra phone. While building my android camera app, a friend of mine lent his x7U to fix the bugs on my app and also to test the phone a bit.
It's such a pity that Oppo closes the telephoto lenses behind a system flag. I wasn't able to enable those on my app, but I've managed to improve the app a bit. This version is still under testing, but I will be releasing the update soon.

AnotherCam

It's a paid app, but I've tried to make as cheap as possible to focus on my actual device, an Oppo Reno13F. I want the best photo as possible as all of you probably want, so keep an eye for the next updates.
While it's on testing, have a look at the photos shot with the x7U that I've used during my trip. It's a very fun device to have, and very capable. Hopefully, I will be able to provide most of the features and raw power for the Oppo devices that are not locked behind a system wall.

First pair, Blayzer, questions...

This is my first pair of Meta glasses, and I have some questions.

I feel a pain over my ear, like the arms are too wide or something. After some time, it starts to give some painful feel. It is tolerable, but not comfortable. Anyone has a suggestion for this? Like a silicone sleeve or something that makes it less wide (raising the glass a bit thou)?

Another thing is Meta AI. This is not a local LLM, and i believe meta is trying to avoid killing their servers, but, is it me or is it pretty much useless? The AI capability has almost the quality of a local LLM on a pc. It responds to everything either too basic or it is just too dumb to answer.

Last thing. Apps compatibility. I cannot do email search, dont have locations or directions. I mean... are there any information about app compatibility roadmap? If they will improve it or increase the apps? Because, damn... you end up avoiding using the exactly thing that they sell, which is an AI glasses.

What do you mean by "pro" camera?

Imho, I think mid/high tier phones might be able to produce decent photos with enough amount of processing. The reason why I think that, is because Google used to do it with the Pixel lineup. The problem thou, is that with the increased amount of processing, you started to get oversharp images and digital blobs. The purpose of AnotherCam is to give you the most information as possible for you to edit your photos.
This image is a huge crop of a photo shot with 3 different apps.
The phone used here is Oppo Reno13 F 5G.
The first shot is with pro controls (I wanted to avoid noise with high iso) on the default camera app. The oversharpness is noticeable, as so the blobs (fur grouped together like paint).
The second shot is another app that shoots RAW, but not treated RAWs. A HUGE improvement over the default camera app.
The third shot is done with ANOTHERCAM app. Stack + super res. This is a small zoom to match the other photo's zoom, but don't get me wrong, this is a 50MP image, packing around 300MB of information. Details are there, not overly digital, controlled noise... It's good. Just keep in mind the size of the photos you are producing, so don't use it always. But if you need quality... Then it's here for you.

First App Release + Sale

Hey there everybody,

After doing some overall testing with the devices and friends available, also with some of the initial Reddit testers, I think I managed to cover most of the issues with the controlled number of devices + multiple improvements in RAW processing and interface overall.
But that doesn't mean it will work on all Android devices right from start... you know this, I know this. That is why I want to run this reddit to gather any issues and suggestions that you might have on this app.

First thing first, this app is focused on RAW first. That saying, I know you want better processed images, specially for LUT and post processing. I will improve it, I promise. I want it too and I am not entirely happy with the current results. So that will be the first thing I will work on after this initial release.

But we don't want promises, right? I want this app to be good for everyone as much as possible, specially for lower end devices that are locked with a sub-par default camera app. That said, I don't want to target an expensive app, but something accessible and reasonable to all.

That said, I am running a small first release SALE for a week, so it is accessible for you to get it.

Hey there everybody,

I have been fixing most of the issues and making improvements that were annoying me for quite a while. I think I have now a reasonable app. I am using it to shoot more and getting results to show, but I wasn't really happy until now.

I have added zero shutter lag feature and improved the speed of super resolution, which was pretty annoying to me. Also added a small tutorial when the app is first opened.

If you are a beta tester and you have any suggestions or issues, let me know.

I will be soon releasing the app, so, let's get ready for a lot of issues from multiple devices... Android pain...

Adding a few feature and more explanation

I have added some fixes and improvements overall to the interface, and also some noise treatment for super res, but I want to talk about something else... zoom.

Vendors has always been treating digital zoom as a great feature and we were led to believe that.
In theory, yes, you will look at your photo and think it was zoomed and you didn't lose too much information in the end, specially with small crop factors like 2... 3x zoom.

So I thought about changing that. I want digital zoom to be understood and used as your last option. The way zoom works in most cameras is... you pinch to zoom (outwards) and you pinch to zoom inwards to zoom out.

Well... not in AnotherCam. Digital zoom are digital crop of your sensor data. When you are zooming, you are losing information around... how much? Well, see for yourself. Look how much a 2x and a 3x zoom crops the total sensor data.
While looking at that, I want you to think twice if it is worth to zoom or just... take a few steps forward...
In AnotherCam, the image won't zoom for you, you pinch to make the crop smaller... and that is your zoom. No tricks to make you believe zoom is better. When I say the focus is raw data, I really mean it.

You want zoomed RAWs? I will provide you... but always keep in mind how much more you might be losing, just because of framing. Sometimes, it is just better to crop/zoom later in post.

I hope you all enjoy the new features (also double tap to lock iso/shutter/focus).
I need to make a tutorial when opening the app for the first time... but let me know if you guys have any issues or requests!

Details and natural noise

RAW data is great to get the most information as possible.
Sometimes, if not all the time, you will feel the need to crop your image. That's why it is always a good idea to have great details and less digital processing. Fur and trees are the most noticeable spots if you love to pixel peep.
These images were all shot on an Oppo Reno13F 5G.

About Focus Slider

Hey people... I wanted to post this to give a brief explanation about the focus slider.
As you might know, I have an Oppo Reno13F. One user complained that his Vivo phone didn't had the full focus range, so I started digging into that, because I also felt my AF was focusing way closer than the slider possibility.

So what is going on, at least in my case...

Oppo under report the min distance of focus on my device, saying it is 0.10, while the actual min is about 0.07m.
So, I could not find any other way to get the actual min distance... so I asked AI to give me some help, and while the suggestion is bad, it will fix what the actual device informs.

== What do you want to know?

Initially, you will open the camera and you will notice the amount of debugging lines (these are temporary for now).

One says: focus: rep 0.10m... af 0.07m...
What that means is, the reported focus of the device through its flags is 0.10m, so initially, the focus will be set at that point min.

== What you have to do?

This part is important, if you want to ignore everything, just read this part.

Leave the AF enabled, bring your hand closer and let it focus (as close as possible). That will give the ACTUAL min focus distance. The slider min focus will then be set to that amount, and the debug line "af 0....m" will be the focused min distance.

== What are the issues?

If a device focus is said as not calibrated via camera2 api, that means the app cannot use that information truthfully. So the min distance will be kept as the reported min focus and not the actual focus.

== Conclusion

I know, I didn't want to follow this path, but as vendors works differently, and hardware changes, this is the only way that I accepted as a "workaround".
I think it is better than clamping your device real possibilities.

As always, I am open to ideas and suggestions, specially bugs.
I will start with the main bugs like camera ids and these other issues. I will try also to tackle the most devices as possible, but I can't guarantee that every device will be supported, BUT I WILL TRY MY BEST.

A Brief Tutorial and Explanations

I am truly sorry for this late tutorial, I've been digging the other issues, but allow me to leave at least the overall ideas.

First things first... the viewfinder and main screen. I didn't want to add a lot of things that might annoy you in the long term. I want a simple and straight forward control.
How many times do you find yourself enabling and disabling focus peak, controlling white balance.
Remember, this is a RAW first camera. The initial format is RAW only.

Regard cropping. I want a RAW crop. I can do it. The issue... there is a risk of third party apps that won't accept the size of the raw crop. Since RAW stack is already taking too long, I am not very happy in increasing the time just to crop a 300MB image.

About noise control. The reason I have created this is because when stacking, with a small sensor, the cell gets excited very often with too much noise. When you stack the images, some pixel color noise will show up. We might want some natural color noise, but not at a point that is too visible and not controlled. It is under testing thou, my Reno13F gets too much noise while my pixel 3a doesn't, so I believe it might be sensor quality.

About ISO/Shutter/Manual. I tend to use ISO priority the most. The reason is that on cheaper phones, the limit of the ISO regarding noise is around 400 at most. 800 is very noise, trust me. While we cannot reduce to lower ISO than 100, we might need to set 100 whenever possible. I only go to manual if the exposure is too underexposed for my taste. Shutter priority? It is there... lol... you can use it if you want.

White balance... Most of the pipelines in cameras usually already add some color correction. My Pixel 3a? Nope. So I ended up with very cold images. Should you use white balance? In my person opinion... only if your photo is too cold. Don't forget. You are using RAW (or at least you should be using) as your main output, and color correction can be done in post without losing too much data. So it is there, but I never saw myself (in any camera app) changing white balance that much.

Regarding LUTs. I just missed to have them on an Android phone. There are no LUT loading feature in any app I have ever bought, so the idea here is to be able to load it. Should I make a list of loadable LUTs? To be fair... I don't like the idea. I think of LUT now as a camera that you purchased because you like the color output. You don't buy a Leica to be able to pretend is a Sony. You want that color and that color only. So I don't want LUTs to be easy replaceable. I might change this idea one day, but right now, I am so sick of having a list of LUTs that most of them looks just the same or I forget which one I like the most.

Stacking. This is pretty much the purpose of this app. If you never played with cameras before, there is a channel that I have used so much when learning to shoot and they had this technique to reduce noise:

Noise reduction with stacking

The idea is simple. Take lots of shots, put them one on top of the other and make a calculation to "average" the pixels. If a spot was black, then you got color noise there, like red, then another photo has black, and another gray, if you average all these images, you will get something closer to black than to red.
That concept works to clean the images and also to make things sharper without actually increasing sharpness of the photos (detecting edges and increasing values).
Don't get me wrong. Stack will make the images a bit smooth, because people shake, sensors shake etc. So a bit of sharpness will be added after, but not like a crazy sharpness like iphones.

Anyway, saying all that, you can use these techniques to improve image quality and also give more definition to increase image size a bit (not too much).
That is why the stacking feature will help you to remove noise first. Because you are stacking, you can also do bracketing/hdr (high dynamic range). I was a fan of gcam back then, but now, images are so flat... you lose so much of that punchy contrast. I didn't want that. So my hdr you will need to expose the darks, and it will reduce the highlights. That's it. No fancy way of finding what is what.
If you want, you can use stacking and super res together, but keep in mind that stacking is slow on cheaper phones, so that means i will take some time, and I TOTALLY recommend a tripod for that case. Don't use for moving subjects. You will get halos because of the stacking.

I hope this tutorial explain the overall idea of the app and the features it has at this moment. I also thank you for supporting and providing feedbacks and suggestions. I am opened to any comments and you are all welcome to message me.

It felt so digital and lost a lot of quality. So I have decided to create an app to tackle basically the lower models, but not too low that hinders from basic processing.

The focus of my app is to create RAW files, but having some of the features of apps that already exist in iOS.

The focus of this app is:

- be simple - Give manual control for the user, specially iso, since lower devices are very intolerant to higher iso.

- focus peak - For some reason, I always had issues with focusing on my Reno. So I need to see where my focus is at moment.

- RAW - No need to explain. Reno doesn't have RAW, and I need the most information possible to get something better.

- Stacking - This is needed to reduce noise overal. It is a technique that you can do it even in normal pro camera (and gcam also does the same).

- Super res - Since i am stacking, why not generate RAW stacked image? The issue here is size. Keep in mind the output file will be around 300MB.

- LUTs - I never saw an app on Android that would allow you to load LUTs. iOS has tons. So, let´s not envy them.

- Cropping - Oppo premium tier has that Hasselblad crop, we want that also, right?

- The rest is maybe just gimmick (at least for me), like burst, bloom, halo, grain...

This is a paid app, but my focus is not the high-end, premium tier phones.
It's mostly for phones that has an average hardware, but it is hindered by the default camera app or you cannot find anything better.
Don't get me wrong. This might help with your premium tier phone, but the main problem here that I am trying to solve is to have a better photo that, currently, my phone doesn't want me to take. So, I hope that the price is fair.

I am not expecting this app to be your main camera.
Far from that.
I hope that, when you just need a decent RAW photo with the most natural capture as possible, with natural color noise, grain and details, then, this camera might be for you.

It is the guys that has phones like mine and want to get something fairly better, so the price I am targeting is cheap. If i release you as a tester, you might see as paid, but you won't be charged.

This is a super res taken on both default camera app of the Oppo Reno 13F 5G and my app. Both generates a 50mp photo, but the default camera creates a jpeg and mine is a raw. The default app is around 6MB while mine goes with 300MB, so it's a huge file.
The reason here is, if I want a super res image, I really need it and I don't want the app to cut corners for me. That's why the focus here is RAW first.

I have an app that need testers

Hey there everybody.
I was recently playing with my Oppo Reno 13F 5G and I wasn't really happy with the photos. It felt so digital and lost a lot of quality. So I have decided to create an app to tackle basically the lower models, but not too low that hinders from basic processing.
The focus of my app is to create RAW files, but having some of the features of apps that exist in iOS.
The focus of this app is:
- be simple, leave manual control for the user, specially iso, since lower devices are very intolerant to higher iso.
- focus peak. For some reason, i always had issues with focusing on my Reno.
- RAW. No need to explain. Reno doesn't have RAW, and I need the most information possible to get something better.
- Stacking. This is needed to reduce noise overal. It is a technique that you can do it in pro camera, and gcam also does the same.
- Super res. Since i am stacking... why not generate RAW stacked image? The issue here is size. Keep in mind this file will be around 300MB.
- LUTs. I never saw an app on android that would allow you to load LUTs. iOS has tons. So, let´s not envy them.
- Cropping. I want that hasselblad look from top end Oppo's phones.
- The rest is just gimmick (at least for me), like burst, bloom, halo, grain...

If anyone is interested, send me a message with your email so i can add you as a tester. I need to fill the spots to release the app. When released, it will be a paid app, but, again, my focus is not the high end premium tier phones. Camac is adding shader script support in beta and it's giving me such nice results.
One thing that I was going to request, but now... I think it's better to not have... Is the viewfinder actually representing the final result.
But i think that would make the viewfinder slow to respond and make composition even harder, compared to other apps.

What do you guys think?

- Viewfinder fast and responsive, but without the final result, apps like camac, mood.

- Viewfinder showing the final shot (or close to), but being slow with low shutter speeds and colors still not matching the end result, apps like moment, no fusion.

These photos were shot with Camac, fast try and error, fast set up.

We all know that iphones doesn't take the crown nowadays, but you still can get nice shots...
Apps like moment v2, Camac, nofusion etc. Might help you get the best of your artistic vision.

Ps. i hate how Reddit show a cropped version of the photos and you have to click to see the image.
