Irish Cavalry officers tunic, 1937

A pretty cool and rare tunic I purchased recently. This style of tunic was used by the Irish army as officers Mess dress from 1935-55. This particular example has solid silver buttons hallmarked for 1937 making it an early piece as the uniform was only introduced 2 years earlier.

This double breasted 'Uhlan' style of tunic was exclusively used by Mounted officers of which the cavalry corps made up the bulk of.

The rank insignia show that the individual who owned this piece was a colonel and the braiding on the epaulettes and lanyard are made of woven aluminum (although wealthy officers often upgraded this to Silver bullion)

The medal on the tunic is the medal for service during WW2 known as "the emergency" in Ireland
