Buying a Condo Abroad

Any Opinions on buying a condo abroad? This would be in latam for me. I know it will be a headache.

I would rather rent for sure but if I retire or semi retire at 40-45 I could be looking at 40 years of retirement. A lot can change.

I have to admit I am a bit of a worrier but having lived all over the world and seeing fluctuations in currencies/col over the years as well as what’s going on with US debt and spending I am concerned that sometime in the next 30 years I will wake up and rent in many of these cities abroad will no longer be ‘cheap’.

Like I said, I’d much rather rent but I don’t want priced out of the market when I’m 60. Any thoughts?

Is this going to get better?

To keep a long story short, my spouse has an alcohol issue. Over the years I drank with her mostly out of not being able to stand being sober around her while drunk but we usually didn’t drink a lot. Split a bottle of wine. Maybe a beer or so with it. But it was 4 nights a week for years. And her sneaking a beer or 2 behind my back once a week as well.

It all came to a head when she was arrested for DV2(hit me, threw things at me, kid was in bed) and I gave up drinking and also demanded she do the same. It was a rocky road and the police were involved one more time, no arrest. Finally she agreed to stop and she was set on it. It was the first time she wanted it and was sincere.

Now 6 months later she slowly sneaking drinks again. Maybe just once a week. But I can see it coming back. Needing drinks at all celebrations.

If she was a polite drunk I really wouldn’t care. But she is a very mean drunk and it doesn’t take much to set her off before she is cursing me out with the kids around. She has also driven drunk a couple of times with our child. (I don’t always have immediate proof of these instances)

I’m finally at the end of my rope. While things have been better, her sneaking drinks at the playground is a sign to me that it’s going to get bad again.

Other than this issue we are good together. Kids are good. I’ve built significant assets for our family. It’s hard to break up the family it breaks my heart. Break up the family then have to also take care of her financially. Yikes.

I start to worry about my mental health in a situation like that.

Another huge concern is while I’m around, she behaves somewhat. When she is on her own I really have no idea what happens, especially with the amount of pure cash she would receive in divorce.

Do they ever come around? It’s been 1 year since the arrest.

‘Bad time’ or ‘unpaid vacation’

Does Lockheed allow this?

Looking at taking a job and we are mid year so I’ll be low on vacation. With my current job I planned end of year trips and saved vacation for it but I’d be starting from scratch at lockheed For this year.

Do they allow employees to take unpaid time off? To a certain degree? Current employer allows 40 hours before write up(though I don’t do it). It’s the only time I’ve seen this.

My company for a few years manipulated my time card in order to not pay an off shift bonus which continued until now.

TLDR: Time card was manipulated as if I worked my shift 1 hr 1 min earlier so I could clock out in the system before midnight. This avoiding the night shift bonus.

I’ll try to keep it short. Originally, the company and 1 individual agreed on a sort of split shift that ran until 1 am. They needed another person to work the shift for safety reasons and per the handbook.

The time card access was new to us at this point. And a couple years later I realized on it they had me clocking out in the system the entire time at 11:59 instead of 1 am when I left. I didn’t think much of it.

Forward a couple more years and it was evident what was going on. The shift had also become incredibly important to meet weekly goals as well.

Long term it turned into a fight just to get off this shift, our leader ignored us. Including emails calling out what was going on.

What proved the manipulation point was my coworker did a shift swap and when he came back they corrected his time card to leaving at the correct time, 1 am. And he began to receive the pay differential.

Finally got HR involved, took months but they Seemed receptive. In the end they offered to back pay up to where the other individual began to receive the differential. They said because I took the shift not knowing of the differential that it wasn’t required to be paid…seems off.

But to me they or the person who set it up, manipulated the time card willfully in order to not trigger the 10% bonus, then the current people in charged pushed back on me and ignored me for years. The 2nd part is my bigger concern because per our handbook you can only do these things 16 weeks and I was ready to go back to my shift.

Our handbook has specific rules about working off shifts and receiving the off shift differential, but my shift was more split, close to a 2nd shift type hours(but later). the time card system is what wanted to trigger the differential.

The total wages owed would be north of 50k, if they do in fact owe. It’s a major company btw
