Ian Bannen in "Flight of the Phoenix" (1965)

I have long been a fan of 1965's "Flight of the Phoenix" but only just discovered that Ian Bannen received a Best Supporting Actor nomination for it. Not to throw any negativity towards Bannen, who was a terrific actor, but I don't understand why he was nominated. The film was full of strong performances and memorable characters. Even though I just re-watched it, I barely remember Bannen's role. Richard Attenborough, Hardy Kruger, Peter Finch and Ronald Fraser all seem more likely contenders for a supporting Oscar.

Does anyone have any insight into how Bannen was singled out for the nomination?

Rohmer's "Green Ray" ("Summer")

This is a shot in the dark, but does anyone have any insight into why Eric Rohmer's "The Green Ray" (aka "Summer") hasn't had a Criterion Blu-ray release or if you think it might ever? It's one of my all-time favorites.

TOCCC: Moody Personalities in Space :-)

Listening to "To Our Children's Children's Children" this morning I was struck by how three of the songs' takes on space so perfectly matched each of their songwriter's sensibilities:

  1. "Floating": Ray: "Whee! Isn't this fun?!"

  2. "Out and In": Mike: Chilling, watching the planets and musing philosophically.

  3. "Gypsy": Justin: "Trapped alone in a frozen wasteland forever!! AAAAH!"

All great songs.
