What's with the badly tuned cars?

A shit ton of car with not just loud exhausts, but constantly backfiring. It scares my dog while walking him, and now that he's blind it scares him even more.

Is this the latest fad in car customizing, like the stupid trend of extreme negative camber (15°) from a few years ago?

Or just a lot of kids with mistuned engines?

Think your pen is clean?

Most old hands know this but for the novices out there: just because flushing your pen returns clear water doesn’t mean it’s truly clean.

As an illustration, this pen was flushed multiple times, spent time in a sonic cleaner and was “clearly” clean.

Then, when loaded up with clear water, you get this. This, by the way, was the third 24h soak.

Don’t rush cleaning. Give it time and let it soak.

The Bird

In every other line the queenside bishop is fianchettoed first and then white castles. But in this particular line, for no obvious reason to me, it's “we’ll castle, since we’ve developed the kingside fully.”

Can someone enlighten me why in this particular case castling is prudent, but in all other cases you need to fianchetto first? Not to mention that the fianchetto becomes problematic if black decides to play g6 first.

It happened (after 4 years)

I was picking up my dog from the vet. As I had a list of questions that needed answers I brought my notes set (pouch w/notebook and my two daily writers, Leonardo's).

At the vet's office someone brings in my dog's collar that I apparently dropped in the parking lot. Then I discover that my blue Pura is missing. I had left the pouch open as this particular notebook didn't fit very well.

No one had found the pen - or at least not dropped it off.

The Pura's were a limited edition so you can't really replace them.

Two days later I find it in the trunk of my car. The pouch never got close to it, but I'm glad it's back, But from now on they're not leaving my house and I take a pair of Lamy Al-stars on the road.

Yorkies and whiskers

How hard is it for a groomer to not cut the whiskers of a yorkie when grooming? Are there any cuts where it's easier?

I want to know how reasonable/unreasonable the request is to leave the whiskers untouched.

I'm not a collector...

Especially not of a single model/color kind. Except for M800's, and now I have my RGB triad complete, with a Stresemann and a brown one to boot.

Until the next striped M800 comes along, my wallet will be safe.

PSA: don’t use booking.com

This weekend was my mom’s birthday. I booked a ticket through that site because, well, there are many options and transatlantic in the summer is expensive and booking.com is legit.

OMFG was I wrong.

At first I thought everything was good. Until the day before I left; my mother died. The funeral was planned for today, the day I’d fly back.

Booking.com (BC): to change the return flight, call the airline.

Airline (AL): we don’t have your payment details, we can’t make changes. Talk to your agent.

BC: nope, airline

AL: we need a 7 digit ITAR authorization code. With that only the agent can make changes.

BC: yes, you sound stressed. A supervisor you say? They will call you back within 24 hours.

36 hours later: Yes, this is the supervisor telling you to call the airline (after a lot of cajoling he does give me the 7-digit ITAR number)

AL; I don’t give a flying fuck about your ITAR code. Only the agent can authorize a change.

By now it’s less than 48 hours away from when my return flight departs

BC: we understand your frustration. I cannot help you but a supervisor will call you in 24 hours (this is important)

AL: oh, you have the magic 7 digit number? I feel really bad fir you, let me see if this works (rebooks flight) you are my hero

AL sends confirmation of new return flight

BC: as a reminder your flight will leave tomorrow

<Funeral>

BC AFTER 48 HOURS: hey about rebooking that flight, you need to call the airline for that.

Lesson learned. I will never ever again use a booking site and always make sure I am booking directly through the airline. This was a total unmitigated clusterfuck and I learned that this is par for the course.

Dublin Airport

Landing at 6 AM for a 2 hour layover. Are there any recommended places I can enjoy a refreshing cup of tea, preferably in a real (not plastic/paper) cup?

Where do large teabag brands source their tea from?

I've always been told that bagged tea is just the leftover dust from "regular" (loose leaf) tea production.

But that doesn't add up. Sure, twinings and lipton sell loose leaf, but they're offering 10× (and assuming selling) as many bagged tea varieties in the supermarkets. And then there's brands like Rose tea who only sell bags.

Do they just pulverize the leaves? "Leftover" doesn't do the math for me.

crosswalks and stopping for pedestrians

Of course, it's the law, Many crosswalks even have the day-glo yellow board with a stop sign on it.

Reality is of course that, unless I have a particular urge that day to meet God, I have to wait a minute or two for a gap in traffic because rarely ever will someone stop for me. Or after a dozen cars, one will stop, I will have to walk close to the center of the road and wait for at least half a dozen cars to pass from the other direction, hoping not to be ran over by some impatient a-hole who decides to pass the car that originally stopped.

Do people not see me? Do they not know the rules? Do they not give a shit?

Today was insightful. Cop car approaches from side street in opposite direction and decides to wait about 5' back while I walk towards the crosswalk. First car that approaches slams on the brakes and comes to an urgent stop.

I think I have my answer.

Small 9" board & pieces

A little while ago I bought a small set, mainly to be used at home for analysis and reading books. I wanted something tiny, so it fits on my desk in front my of my screen and I can replay games from e-books. In those situations a compact arrangement is no big deal, even preferred (at least to me, YMMV) as the pieces don't need "breathing space" to be moved around quickly under time pressure.

With that ("the pieces are too big you need to fit four pawns on a square" "no they're not, different circumstances and demands") out of the way, I really liked this no-frills travel set on a 9" board sold be chess house dot com (I know an Italian store sells it in Europe but I forgot which one). The pieces are remarkable good by "magnetic game" standards. The only thing I didn't like was the cheap fake-leather board, while convenient for on-the-go, it has this hump at the underside where the fold is.

So I commissioned a board on Etsy - 1" squares, Jaques-style, maple/cherry with an oak rim. And I really like it.

(Picture includes a pair of pens just for scale purposes. It's really small)
