YouTube’s AI Detection Kicked Us in the Face

Every creator's worst nightmare just happened to us: The YouTube algorithm actually blocked us. It started slowly at first. Some videos started showing strange view fluctuations. Our second to last video did very badly, but this just happens sometimes, so we didn’t think that much about it.

But then our last video, about Superpredators, did extremely badly. It was our worst upload since 2013. But it did badly in a weird way: Almost every single metric was well above average: People clicked the video more often and watched it for longer, and the people who watched it, on average, loved it! So it should have been at the very least an average upload, not the worst in over a decade.

So we quickly got in touch with YouTube, and they actually confirmed pretty quickly that something was going on. It turned out that YouTube’s automatic AI detection tools wrongly think that our very much human-made videos are AI Slop. So it started to choke our channel. Our contacts at YouTube were amazingly helpful and transparent with us, and hopefully the bug is fixed for now.

In principle, we are all for blocking AI slop from the platform; it really seems to have been bad luck.

Since we really love this video, we have taken it offline. We are updating and changing it a bit to make it worth watching a second time. We’ll reupload it in a few weeks, and hopefully this time the anti-AI tool will feel ok about it. If you have watched it before, it would help us a lot if you watch it a second time and all the way to the end for an Algorithm boost!

We’ll keep you posted!

What went wrong? (a quiz)

Dang it! You hate to take a roll out of the developer tank and just see blank film.

So I was up till 3am checking my gear, trying to figure out what went wrong before I figured it out just before falling asleep. Can you figure out the problem?

The gear: The most perfect Hasselblad kit I got from the son of a photographer that had passed. Love this camera. The viewfinder prism with metering is so convenient. Well loved in it's past life,well loved in it's current life.

The Film: 1 roll of Ilford Delta 100, 3 of Ilford Ortho 80.

The setting: I was photographing old pioneer ruins and cabins like the charcoal kiln on the 2nd roll. I prefer ortho for old historic buildings. It was a beautiful day in the mountains where these old ghost towns were. The deepest blue skies and the fluffiest white clouds. They made the perfect backdrops for all the amazing pictures I took that didn't develop.

Hints: Tested all the lenses afterwards. Shutters all working. The camera is fully functional, the "barn door" camera flaps open before the shutter triggers as normal.

The film wasn't loaded backwards, I remember lining up the arrows on the film cartridges when loading.

All shots were individually metered for the bright noonday sun.

A hint of square exposure still shows up on one of the blank rolls.

All clues in the pics above.

So what user error occurred that killed most of a vacation's pictures and my proudest shots from the trip?

In case you're wondering what $1 Million bought us at the Great American Fair

Here's is video of Utah's contribution to Trump's Great American Fair. Apparently it cost us as Utah taxpayers 1 Million Dollars.

Honestly not bad; something I'd expect in a visitor center for Utah. But what did they do with the other $900,000?

This guy is looking for a home.

Since multiple people expressed interest. His former owners never came looking for him. He's up for adoption at the Summit County Animal Shelter, 435-615-3985.

He's probably only a year or two old but has been through some training. Gets along well with other dogs and travels well. But because of his ordeal being abandoned he's a bit clingy right now and needs a family patient enough to rebuild trust that he has a stable home. Also he's still in his energetic puppy years so he's very playful.

Contact the shelter if you're really interested. He's friendly and a good breed so he'll probably find a home quick.

Found lost/abandoned dog in the Uintas

~~~~~~~~~~Update!~~~~~~~~~~~~
No luck finding the owner on social media. The dog is now with Summit County Animal Control.
As per the Utah 24 hour rule (I've learned a lot about lost dogs in the last 12 hours) we turned him into Animal Control. We called tons of a shelters in SLC, Park City, and Heber. All said the same thing. They couldn't take him, he had to got to the shelter that services where he was found. This is part of the law, you have to report and turn in a dog you find to Animal Control, you can't re-home them yourself. This is to help the original owners have a chance in finding their lost dog, not everybody uses social media, so the nearest shelter is the point people we'll be looking.
Summit County Animal Control was very sympathetic to him and want to help him out. He'll be under observation and waiting for his owners for the next 5 days. If the owner doesn't find him in those 5 days then he'll be available for adoption. But they said the same thing. He's so cute he'll find a home quick; so either way, he's on his way to a good life now.
Full long story in a comment below if anybody got emotionally invested.
