The 2nd most important security feature on PSN
Since there’s a lot of talk about accounts being lost due to the recent fiasco, I want to remind people to avoid using PSN social features. I’ve wrote in about this in the past but it never got it on the show.
I had a friend get suspended for two weeks. He definitely has a mouth on him, but never says anything overtly offensive other than fowl language. He messaged Sony to get an explanation of why he was suspended and they offered nothing and immediately ended the chat.
After this, we used some alt accounts, and an old friends account that’s no longer active, to test out certain messages to see what would get accounts suspended. Our findings were a bit shocking.
Foul language of any sort is considered worthy of a suspension by Sony. The words “damn” and “shit” were used, not even in an offensive manor, and got one of our alts suspended for 2 weeks. Past that, ANY message that gets reported such as “hey want to play later?” will be removed by Sony moderation. We were not able to determine if enough of those messages get reported if you will be suspended.
The last thing we tested was reporting an old friend who we haven’t talked to since 2018. We reported the messages in that conversation, and they were removed by Sony moderation. This proved that there’s absolutely no limitation on account flags.
I know a lot of us have had our accounts since we were kids. If there’s any message you’ve ever sent, especially if there’s foul language, your account is at risk. I also want to remind everyone that a few years ago, they added voice chat recording/reporting, so even if you’re in a private chat with your friends and someone reports it, your account could be at risk.
I recommend everyone use discord for any voice calls and all communication with your friends rather than PSN native features. If your account is ever suspended, and/or eventually banned, you are not entitled to any explanation, recourse, or refunds, and you are completely out of luck and all the money you’ve ever spent on your account.
TLDR: PSN social features are incredibly strict with their moderation if reported, and it can lead to account suspension or ban if used.
