cart recovery went from 3% to 15%. that's the problem.
we turned discounts on in our Whatsapp abandoned cart messages a few months back. recovery went from 3-5% to about 15%.
good result. been annoyed about it ever since.
Whatsapp only lets a person receive about 2 promotional messages a day. not 2 from you. 2 total, across every business that has their number, and abandoned cart messages count toward it. took me embarrassingly long to work this out because nothing tells you. no bounce, no warning, dashboard just says sent. i was rewriting copy for messages that were never arriving.
so it's a race. two other stores reach your customer first and you're done for the day.
and the thing that makes a rushed message convert is a discount. so we put one in. so has everyone else, presumably, because we're all reading the same docs.
the bit i keep chewing on is that some of that 15% was always going to buy. we know that because 3-5% came back before we ever sent a coupon. i just can't tell which ones they are, so everyone gets the money off. paying people to do a thing they were already doing.
and it's the good customers who'll clock it first, obviously. leave cart, wait, get 15% off. that's not a hard pattern to spot.
can't really opt out either. if i switch it off tomorrow every other store carries on and my customers still learn to wait, they just learn it from someone else.
should probably say, 15% only tells me the discount works. no idea whether more people are abandoning on purpose now. never tracked it, which in hindsight was stupid.
anyway. has anyone here recovered carts without a discount and still got through? or has everyone quietly decided this is just what it costs now
